Marginally better performance on database writes with stock 12 on the RPI4b. Order of magnitude better performance on reads with 14 . That Cortex A-72 CPU is dwarfed by a budget Intel i7 with a dedicated SSD. Still, evidence that stock FreeBSD 14 >= the latest Raspberry PI OS for complex workloads (like database operations). IMO, native is really the killer DB feature on BSD.

Long time no see... We've been busy with our move to Greece, and also catching covid by our movers (we literally caught it by the people who brought our stuff in our new house -- ironic). So I've been sick for over a week now with some difficulty shaking it. Instead of painting during this downtime (this is a painting I did a few months ago), I've been installing #Debian #Linux on some old laptops that I had around, breathing new life to them. I wish more people were to install Debian with XFce instead of creating e-waste. The system almost flies on 15 year old laptops with 2 GB of RAM.

- Update of the house server to 16GB of RAM - in progress...

1st, let's upgrade the qemu installation to 7.2.9 then update the and the Slackware 15 VMs. (yes, I run on Slackware).

It will be nice to open this server and clean it completely, I suspect it's fairly dirty.

Followed by an install of Monitorix (monitorix.org) on the server, since it seems more appropriate for this small machine than NetData.

Also: a probable update on the packaging chroot. Geeking out! 🤓

Yeah, that would be really cool! While Ubuntu is already very long preparing everything and also having everything in place for rv64 (I think since 20.04 with compiled packages) they could focus the time to support the different hardware boards like , , , , etc. They did a great job and made the entry to the RISC-V world very easy. Honestly, I've just seen this accidentally when grabbing sources to compile for (for the snapshot archive back in that time). Then I just gave Ubuntu a try... Worth a post - kudos!

Having boards from European manufacturers world be really very cool but I guess also much more expensive than the current boards from china. But teaching rv64 assembly is a bit too much, we can be lucky when they teach them at least something in tech :D

Serious questions for this Friday… Are we now at a point of time where we can safely drop legacy and can even use only for servers.

Sure, technically everything works fine on operating systems like , , , etc. and all my monitoring, backup and admin infrastructure is only for years. But dealing with clients is something different. I think most clients already support , especially within my circle but it could still be annoying for people that are forced to use only.

Honestly, is especially probably the best supported OS/Linux distro on this device. StarFive provides ready-to-use images for this board including the drivers and patches. It also works in a Desktop way but lacks hw accel (Vulcan). But this also means, you cannot just simply use the distro kernel to upgrade. OpenBSD finally seems to work from a CLI perspective (for server based things), FreeBSD loads from memory (no write back to SD), and so on. It's still a long way to go! Haven't had any look ad HaikuOS, unforutnaley can't say anything regarding this. Maybe I can have a look at it on the weekend. If you're into RISC, maybe you like to join our little chat in matrix:

Hm, I’m thinking about switching completely my personal servers to based systems. Why?

Because I can! For real, it’s an awesome new platform, almost no one is using it for production (because of the limited support (especially currently from an OS perspective), knowledge and performance). However, I’m already running some boards in production, some tests I already shared with you (see also summary) and we saw that it’s easily running my workloads - so why not?

So when speaking about „why not“ my first issue is that it would force me to instead of . It would be the first time since 2008 running personal Linux server instead of BSD based ones. It’s not a knowledge problem, I heavily even contribute to a Debian based distribution as a developer, it’s more an aspect of philosophy.
