One way of configuring a new system is just moving your whole configuration directories and fixing whatever breaks. Depending on how different the systems are and how many things break you might have a working, customized system after a while fixing.

Another way of configuring a new system is doing the exact opposite of that. You see what the defaults are, and slowly move each configuration individually or even partially, slicing a subset of essential configuration that brings less dependencies in.

If you have the time, the second way helps you really learn both the new system you are moving into and the previous one. You get to thoroughly look at your previous configuration, drop unnecessary customization where defaults could be just as good and reevaluate pointless dependencies.

It will be a lot slower, but you end up with a minimal, portable set of configuration you can then consider a new, streamlined bundle built specially for that machine and moment in time.

Recently got a cheap 128 GB SSD to see how BSD would run on my main machine, and this weekend threw FreeBSD on it. In my tech life, there are some constants like BSDs and Linux, as well as changes that reflect the evolution of technology. I've cyclically used operating systems like MacOS, Linux, and BSDs on my workstations. My journey with mobile devices started before the advent of smartphones, transitioning through the eras of Symbian and BlackBerry, and more recently to iOS and Android.
In 2020, during the lockdown and due to having a mid-range, somewhat outdated smartphone, I decided to switch back to iOS to take advantage of the period's deals. I predominantly used an iPhone for about three years before returning to Android for various reasons. Now, as I deliberate over which browser and email client to use, I'm reminded of how on iOS, life was simpler: all browsers were essentially Safari in disguise, and the integrated Mail client was the least resource-intensive and best integrated with the Apple Watch.

I didn't get your article, usually when anyone doesn't recommend, for instance, an operative system is because:

  • the development is led by corporations who don't respect end users' rights.

  • or because suddenly those corporations made almost impossible to get the source code.

  • or because that OS constantly spy on you.

  • or perhaps fix bugs slower and force you to change your hardware at any new release.

None of the above happens across the majority of the , therefore there is not need to dissuade others to explore them.

If I would explore or on the desktop side, and I do that, it is my concern none your. If I consider, like many others, that is worth investing time in overcome a lot of issues — as in the early days of — I believe that is worth understanding the reasons rather than say: «don't do that!».

The most important thing is if people don't try to make stuff working on the desktop side this will never improve.

If you care about diversity and are against any form on mono-culture you should encourage people to try anything including any BSD, or and .

The Linux-monoculture is a problem, and the only remedy is struggling with other Opensource operative system and help them growing and getting better...

Amid all the OS talk that we have here, I see people mentioning using and its brethren on their desktop. It's a great server OS for sure, but for those who daily drive it, why? Does it have a specific advantage over for you, or just personal preference? Did you switch to it after previously using Linux? Was it your first non-Windows PC OS? Are you an old-timer that ran on a VAX and found it comfortingly familiar? Let's hear your story! 👹

"How it all began"

I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.

My today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.

#1996

This is a photo of a 6-CD set case for "InfoMagic LINUX Developer's Resource". The CD case cover has a whimsical cartoon character on the front, which appears to be an anthropomorphic penguin dressed as a wizard, complete with a wizard's hat and a magic wand. The character is standing on a stylized representation of the globe. The background is blue and there is a yellow banner on the top right corner that says "QuickStart Guide inside". The packaging suggests that this is a software resource kit for Linux developers from the era when software was commonly distributed on CDs.This is a photo of the back cover of the "InfoMagic LINUX Developer's Resource CD-ROM" case. The cover lists the contents of the 6-CD set, including distributions like Red Hat 3.0.3 "Picasso", Slackware 3.1, Debian GNU/Linux 1.1.4, and others, with various kernel sources up to version 2.0.12+. It mentions the inclusion of a "QuickStart" installation guide and additional software like X-Free86 Version 3.1.2, with references to online resources. There's also information about the included on-line documentation like "Installation & Getting Started Guide" by Matt Welsh and "Network Administrators Guide", as well as file format details. Contact information for InfoMagic, including telephone, fax, email, and web address, is listed, along with the company's address in Flagstaff, AZ. A barcode is present on the bottom right. The text indicates the product is from 1996, providing a glimpse into the distribution of Linux software in the mid-1990s.

@Padukajorat while I've yet to try , the concept of Jails is one thing that still confuses me about the whole system!

🫠 iXsystems: No one is being 'marooned' by Debian focus | Chris Mellor

「 BSD aficionados don’t like this change. Moore said: “Talk is cheap and complaints are free. You know, everyone loves to complain about it. But … if people wanted to push FreeBSD forward for the last 15 years, they would have.” 」

🐡 OpenBSD is a Cozy Operating System | Bradley Taunt

✅ Incredibly secure operating system (No xz drama here...)
✅ Detailed documentation. Probably one of the best of any OS
✅ Much smaller codebase and small core team
✅ Complete operating system (kernel, userland utilities, libraries, applications combined)

This has been a very intense week, and today wasn't any different, but I managed to get back on track with the setup of the BSD Based mail hosting. Now the quota is properly managed (and displayed on SOGo), and I've also implemented IMAP ACLs so I can share some mail folders with other users in the same domain.

The setup is progressing, and I'm really pleased with the result!

Continuing on the theme of and how I , here's a little video of how I have my OpenBSD install on this Core 2 Duo launch my Xorg session. Die to limited resources on this iMac, Fluxbox is the window manager of choice here, too. I also have GLsnake and BSOD with only the ENCOM security message from the MCP running, both of which are part of the package.

Though they've been gone for several years now, within the walls of my grandparents' house, I could still sense their presence, hear their voices, and smell their familiar scents. Closing the door for the last time today marked more than just an end to my visits—it symbolized the closure of my childhood and adolescence. It's an incredibly sad day for me. Yet, in this moment of reflection, I'm reminded that the sun will rise again tomorrow. Life, in all its facets, continues to move forward. This includes the BSD-based mail system I've been diligently working on, which is nearing a significant milestone.

🚦🚥 ... ok it works 🌋

A super-simple keyboard for .

Well, I *did* have to fiddle with the keymap.

And I had to add delays 🤯👹 (otherwise there are races between keymap changes and keyboard events).

And I had to misuse the extension, cause applications ignore "synthetic" events. 🫥😣

But hey, it works 🕺

Now needs some basic, uhm, "features" (like recently used, like search by name).

@aral
GPL is a jealous license: If I can't use your code, you can't use mine.

BSD/MIT/X are generous: If you want to use this, you can.

Which follows from where they were made. RMS was upset nobody from SAIL wanted to be near him, and they had printer drivers and he didn't. It's a license for petty people.

BSD was heroic Berkeley hippies giving away their hackery, liberating UNIX from AT&T. It's for heroes.

@puppygirlhornypost@transfem.social is just a project name for a free BSD focused hosting of , and to provide and give back some valuable things back to the community. The primary goal is to provider newcomers educational stuff to learn, test and practice on based systems which they might not be able to afford. Don’t think everyone can buy a VPS, especially not in India or Africa.

I know, it’s limited, because it’s running on my resources that I can provide for free to the community - it’s not much and we’re starting with just 50 free systems, but there’s hope to increase it by time. I also already got in touch with other ones that have similar ideas where we could boost this up.

Huzzah! So quick and easy to upgrade from 7.4 to 7.5, even on this crusty iMac! It actually took me longer to upload the pic and post this. Thanks to all of the devs for making these releases possible!

A silver Intel-based iMac, now running OpenBSD 7.5 after the sysupgrade process, with Fluxbox as the window manager. On the top left is XTerm showing Neofetch output with an ASCII "cute Puffy" logo on the left and brief system information on the right. On the top right is GLsnake. On the bottom right underneath GLsnake is another XTerm window running my script to upgrade user packages via "pkg_add -U", update the firmware via "fw_update", and then delete unneeded packages via "pkg_delete". I've blotted out some of the hostname information in both XTerm windows.
