wow, we already have almost 50 people interested into a weekly meeting. In the BSDCafe we already thought about possible dates and additional organization.

Different timezones make it really hard to just have a single meeting and it might end up in two or even three ones but also trying to avoid fragmentation. But this will probably work out more in an iterative wayโ€ฆ

The current idea is to start Thursdays, 7pm GMT+2 in an unmoderated public jitsi session where everyone can join. I think the targeted user group is able to handle it in that way, like we always do.

The question is also, do we want to have an agenda or only open minded jump in and see how it works out?! My experience is, that people might be shy to start talking, itโ€™ll be silent and people start to dropโ€™s drop. An agenda might be helpful for an initial start but I also want to avoid having an introduction round where everyone tells something about himself. I mean, this can be done optionally, but Iโ€™m also aware of it that some may feel uncomfortable with this. This round should just make fun and not make any pressure or someone feeling uncomfortable.

So, agenda or open minded and free to talk for the first sessions?

I use FreeBSD so that is what I would recommend - with 14.0-RELEASE version.

If you would like to start with like experience - may be GOOD idea on the start - then You should try latest 24.x version - which is also FreeBSD 14.x based.

Assuming You will be using x86-64 CPU you will have to download amd64 image.

*-disc1.iso for CD/DVD
*-memstick.img for USB Pendrive

Let me know how it went and if You need any help with it.

More likely: one of the underlying problems with FreeBSD support for audio hardware.

For Firefox: whilst I would like Tier-2, I have been very happy with the Tier-3 build target (FreeBSD/x86, x86-64, Aarch64 (clang) <firefox-source-docs.mozilla.or>) for as long as I have used FreeBSD-based systems. That is, maybe a decade.

The very recent 123.0โ‹ฏ launch bug that bites users of FreeBSD (including me, on FreeBSD 15.0-CURRENT) is not evident with 123.0_2,2 on FreeBSD-based GhostBSD.

Incidentally, <forums.freebsd.org/threads/fir> observes pulse-rust as the audio backend on GhostBSD.

I am giving #GhostBSD a try in a VM, and so far it's pretty good.

The desktop is MATE, which I've never used before (though I was a GNOME 2 user in the pre-Shell days).

You can't get a *really* good feel in a GNOME Boxes VM, but everything seems to work really well and is very responsive.

I installed Foliate (ebook reader), which runs pretty well, except for crashing when you try to change themes. It's not a deal-breaker to start it up again, and the new theme is then active.

My go-to image editor is gThumb, and I installed and gave it a try. Works perfectly.

Since it's in a VM, I can't test out the suspend/resume, which is usually something to look for.

These days OpenBSD is more reliable in terms of suspend and shutdown than Fedora with GNOME, where I get a *won't shutdown/resume* glitch every few tries. I might try GhostBSD on bare metal, and then I'll have more to say about that.

But overall GhostBSD seems to be very solid -- and is probably the easiest way to get a full-featured BSD desktop out of the box.

Improving the new user experience is a focus area for the @FreeBSDFoundation for upcoming work, and there are a number of Foundation folks and people in the community who expect to look at improving the installation experience, the process to get a graphical environment set up, etc.

My hope is to that we can have upstream in the infrastructure and tools that projects like and need.
