@unix_discussions Perhaps I missed it on my first reading, but I'm very curious as to the long-term plans of all the BSDs wrt X and Wayland (or perhaps some third option?).
My sense, tho I'm not close to such things, is that Wayland will eventually oust X from the Linux world leaving X as a largely orphaned graphics system only used, but barely maintained, by #BSD.

This makes me want to use #Netbsd again. The pc I had Freebsd on isnt doing much, maybe Iโll give it a try. All the better if wifi works. I am saddened by the fact I no longer have the motivation to fire up the #vaxstation and install there like I once did.

ใ The bad news is that to have applications running we require access to a larger open source ecosystem, and that ecosystem has a lot of churn and is easily distracted by shiny new squirrels. The process of upstreaming stuff to X.Org is an ongoing process, but it's likely we'll run into things that will never be suitable for upstream ใ

We had nice talks about improving #BoxyBSD, getting new users attracted into #BSD based systems like #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD but also covering the lacks of it. Outcome was, that a one already worked on that which might result in a new community project (which may also result into a new service). I donโt want to teaser too much, the related persons will provide more details and insights. It was a great first meeting, looking forward into the next upcoming ones!

For my #ThrowbackThursday, here's a snapshot of my desk from 2013. Although my workspace was pretty cluttered then and still is, despite being in a different house now. Under the table, there was a tower PCs, running #FreeBSD. The laptop that was on was using #MacOS, while the mini ITX desktop was powered by #NetBSD with #Xen, hosting various services in some domUs. My smartphone at the time was a QWERTY-equipped Samsung #Android, which I had chosen in the hopes of finding a keyboard experience similar to the superb one offered by #BlackBerry. Additionally, there was another laptop beneath the phones operating on #OpenBSD. The Dockstar, running NetBSD, served as my file server; it even had remote access, albeit with a modest broadband speed of just 1.5 Mbit/sec.
Ah, the good old days. ๐

I finally found some time to play with #NetBSD. Linux seems less and less clear. First test on RPI 4 and some success about what I was able to configure: WIFI/LAN, authentication over LDAP, home drives over NFS, static IPv4/IPv6, IPv6 preference. Not everything seems so obvious during configuration, but it is possible to find help. Now need to read some documentation and try to get something working on AWS and replace my Linux running on AMD64.
Why #NetBSD? Because I've never even installed it before and it's supposedly worth it. For the time being I don't plan to migrate any of my laptops, unfortunately Windows is needed for work.

I've found this board in my drawer and I am wondering if i can run any kind of BSD on it: https://vocore.io/v2.html#VoCore
It sports an #Mediatek #MT7628 mipsel_24kc CPU, 128 MB RAM, wlan, eth usb and sdxc. It uses factory uboot, but seemingly mainline uboot supports it. I have seen NetBSD supports this architecture and also found a NetBSD dmesg booting on the same CPU (but different board), so it seems to be promising. However this dmesg is pretty old and it doesn't mentions the wlan hardware, maybe it is/was unsupported. The WLAN hw is MediaTek MT7628AN. Do you happen to know if this chip is supported on #NetBSD ?
Another text for today - " Why you shouldn't run a BSD on a PC"
"Changing GNU/Linux distribution can be done on a whim, as underneath all of that youโve got the same basic operating systems. With BSDs itโs not the same. One should try to understand the downsides, as not to waste the next 20 years exploring an OS that simply is not a good fit."

IIRC and IIUC, #FreeBSD and #NetBSD are branched quite early phase. #FreeBSD (including former #386BSD) focused on performance and stability on (ATM) i386 only, and #NetBSD focused on portability by strictly separating MD parts and MI parts. #OpenBSD was derived later from #NetBSD, focusing on security.
๐ NetBSD turns 30 and releases version 10
ใ Among the highlights are improved SMP performance, faster virtual memory, an improved scheduler, which is aware of performance and efficiency cores, much improved cryptography and security including WireGuard VPN support and support for ARMv8-A security features, and wide-ranging improvements to the system's code sanitizers, testing, and QA ใ

I wasn't aware of how my knowledge about virtualization is very linux-centric.

Hey #BSD Fans!
We all share the same interests - #BSD based systems like #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD and #NetBSD.
We chat all day, sharing thoughts, questions and help. We talk on Matrix across different channels, we share on the #Fediverse. We have @vermaden@bsd.cafe's newsletter, we have @dexter@bsd.network's #FreeBSD #Jails and #bhyve calls and many other ones I can't list here.
Wondering if there would be and interests in the #BSDNetwork, #BSDCafe, etc., for a weekly smalltalk session like in a pub. Just a Jitsi based video/audio call where we can meet, discuss things from newsletter, trending things from the #Fediverse or just have off-topic and openminded discussions. This could result into the #BSDPub meeting.
I know, some people are shy - keep your cam off until you feel comfortable and feel free to join the discussions. Even this meetings should make fun and no pressure - so if someone is not in the mood or can't make it - no worries. No one will judge.
Would you be interested?

Felt like I may have needed a mental health day today, but woke up this morning and feeling much better.
May have also got some company time this week to investigate making a #NetBSD 10 template too :โ)
SmolBSD: make your own BSD UNIX MicroVM
SmolBSD is a tiny BSD UNIX (NetBSD) system creation tool, primarily aimed at building modern, lightweight, fast micro VMs. SmolBSD can start a service in (way) under a second, giving it the ability to be used as a virtualized container, thus reducing attack surface and actually isolating workflows.
โซ SmolBSD website
Neat.
https://www.osnews.com/story/139197/smolbsd-make-your-own-bsd-unix-microvm/
Finally going home after a whole day of meetings.
I'd like to update my #Slackware 15 VMs...
I also think I need to double-check my qemu installation, as 7.2.9 seems to be the last 7.x version (I have 7.2.7 installed).
I still have #NetBSD and #OpenBSD VMs to update or reinstall.
Thinking about setting up a #Slackware mirror.
SearxNG is definitely something I need to setup.
Also SNAC2 under Slackware.
@Neznak I have an obvious bias towards FreeBSD. All of the major BSDs (excluding macOS) have similar management interfaces and packaging systems. They have a common ancestor, but diverged a lot over the last 30ish years. Some things are periodically shared between them.
I would be remiss to not point out #NetBSD as the third large one and #DragonflyBSD as the fourth.
I ran #OpenBSD on a PowerPC Mac for a while and found it very easy to learn coming from #FreeBSD. As @tulpa says, remember that these are all distinct systems, not just distributions packaging the same set of things slightly differently. NetBSD and FreeBSD both branched from 4.3BSD Net/2 (FreeBSD via 386BSD). OpenBSD forked from NetBSD 1.1, Dragonfly from FreeBSD 4.8 - both have now had decades of independent development (or, as independent as permissively licensed open source projects ever are - a lot of people contribute to more than one and code flows in all directions).
The things that keep me on FreeBSD are:
I also use pf (originally from OpenBSD, now ported elsewhere), though NetBSD's npf looks interesting.
