I've just added IPv4 support for SSH on Brew (https://brew.bsd.cafe). For now, it's IPv4 only.
Since the beginning of the BSD Cafe's Mastodon journey, I've not been approving links or trending posts, mainly out of laziness. I did use some hashtags though.
Recently, I noticed that those sections of the site were sadly empty, so I've started to approve some content a few days ago. I check it about once a day, but trending content doesn't come up very often, so I'll continue this way for now.
In the afternoon, one of those emails capable of ruining the day arrives. But then, you walk 18 km, visit the BSD Cafe, and uplift your spirits. Never underestimate the power of a good walk and of the (BSD) Cafe!

Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the entire #Fediverse,
And so, we have reached the end of 2023. For me, it was a positive year (except for the last 15 days, but in the end, it could have been worse), without any particular upheavals and therefore, quite straightforward.
This year, I dedicated myself more to the Fediverse and launched the BSD Cafe project. Without a doubt, this has been among the best things to happen in 2023. I've received a warm welcome, and many wonderful people have joined the project, contributing to its growth. In just a few months (I officially announced and opened registrations on July 20, 2023, so less than six months ago), our Mastodon instance now has 151 active users, with 93 participating in the last month. Then there's the Matrix instance, actively used by many, Miniflux (only used by 4 of us), our Wiki, BlendIT, the ongoing snac2 experiment, and many ideas for the coming months.
I've connected with people who have taught me so much, and the Fediverse has undoubtedly been the "place" where I've learned the most this year, through both interactions and reading what all of you have posted. I've met wonderful people beyond the technical realm and seen beautiful photography (#Photography), the sea (#MeerMittwoch), personal memories (#ThrowbackThursday), captivating windows (#FensterFreitag), amazing cats (#Caturday), and quiet, evocative Sundays (#SilentSunday).
So, from Stefano (a human being, a member of the Fediverse) and Stefano (the Barista of BSD Cafe), I wish everyone a Happy 2024!
I know, to some, celebrating another trip around the sun may seem silly, but I believe it's always better in life to rejoice and celebrate something, anything, rather than argue, harm others, or wage wars. The world would be a better place if we all celebrated a little more.

Official Statement on BSD Cafe VM Issues
I have resolved the issues with the BSD Cafe VM. As is customary, I am providing a technical description of the events to ensure full transparency.
Several weeks ago, I noticed that the primary VM of the BSD Cafe was reaching its capacity. The largest consumers of space were the Matrix and BlendIT jails. To prevent any downtime or issues, given that this VM is hosted on a Proxmox server, I decided to attach an additional virtual disk and expand the ZFS pool onto this disk (using striping, although the underlying storage is mirrored). This process was completed smoothly.
However, this morning I initiated a restart of the underlying physical server (which also hosts other servers, not related to BSD Cafe), and upon reboot, the BSD Cafe VM failed to start, displaying a "zio read error 45".
It was unable to read from the ZFS pool. Consequently, I booted from a FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE ISO to inspect and confirmed that the pool was in perfect condition. To restart the services, I booted using this ISO and executed the "vfs.root.mountfrom" command to mount the BSD Cafe's ZFS dataset. The services resumed successfully.
To simplify future operations, I created an empty VM and, using MFSBSD, reconstructed the boot and swap partitions. I then utilized zfs send and receive to transfer a snapshot of all datasets. Mid-process, for reasons still under investigation, the Proxmox server's kernel became unresponsive. Logs suggest an issue related to the bridge, although neither VM was using any bridge of the physical machine at the time. I will investigate this further.
After rebooting, I continued with the zfs send-receive process, shut down the jails, performed one last incremental zfs send-receive, and rebooted. The new VM (which is essentially the old one, having copied the entire zroot) is now running smoothly with the same characteristics as the previous one.
Everything should now be in order. I apologize for the inconvenience, but such incidents can occur. I would like to remind you that we have local snapshots of all VM datasets taken every 15 minutes and an external backup every hour.

Ok, soon I'll stop the jails of BSD Cafe again for a final zfs send/receive and reboot onto the new VPS. There will be a few minutes of downtime. Sorry about that :-)

Different timezones make it really hard to just have a single meeting and it might end up in two or even three ones but also trying to avoid fragmentation. But this will probably work out more in an iterative way…
The current idea is to start Thursdays, 7pm GMT+2 in an unmoderated public jitsi session where everyone can join. I think the targeted user group is able to handle it in that way, like we always do.
The question is also, do we want to have an agenda or only open minded jump in and see how it works out?! My experience is, that people might be shy to start talking, it’ll be silent and people start to drop’s drop. An agenda might be helpful for an initial start but I also want to avoid having an introduction round where everyone tells something about himself. I mean, this can be done optionally, but I’m also aware of it that some may feel uncomfortable with this. This round should just make fun and not make any pressure or someone feeling uncomfortable.
So, agenda or open minded and free to talk for the first sessions?

Just a Jitsi based video/audio call where we can meet, discuss things from newsletter, trending things from the #Fediverse or just have off-topic and openminded discussions. This could result into the #BSDPub meeting.
I know, some people are shy - keep your cam off until you feel comfortable and feel free to join the discussions. Even this meetings should make fun and no pressure - so if someone is not in the mood or can't make it - no worries. No one will judge.

Honestly, (thats a personal feeling) the BSD community is much more about sharing and providing knowledge (especially in a very valuable form). We can see this in different approaches like @vermaden@bsd.network with his BSD focused newsletter, @stefano@bsd.cafe pushing in for this awesome
#BSDCafe community or @dexter@bsd.network pushing all the jails/bhyve stuff (and there are many more examples, sorry not to mention all ones!).
Everyone does it for free in a suitable way with his own resources each one can afford. Everyone is helping each other. Let’s see that we can bring more values into the community.
You already mentioned some of the interesting points like jails, which are still heavily used even nowadays. But also other things like zfs (ok you could also do it on Linux), pf, etc.. This service should give the possibility to test such things but also all other things which require a static IP - running own Mailserver (including ptr, …), authoritiive name sever,…
If it even helps just a single person to improve it was worth. Currently, everything is build on and running on my personal devlab systems where I can provide leftover resources, but still - for my own security reasons - they’re running on a different net link including completely different ip subnets (imagine getting hit by mail blacklist, etc.).
I want to launch a hashtag where, every Tuesday, I'll post a message and it would be great if it became a habit for many.
In a world full of conflicts, selfishness, and egocentrism, it would be nice to focus on the good that others do, what makes our lives better thanks to the contribution of others.
My first #ThankYouTuesday to the friends of #BSDCafe - both within the community servers and beyond - who have undoubtedly contributed to making my life better, more stimulating, and richer. The main reason, in my opinion, is that registrations are not open but require contacting me directly, which (I am aware) greatly limits the freedom to sign up. The reasons why Miniflux is not open for immediate registration are various, but the main one is that the developers offer paid hosting that helps fund the project. By offering a free service with immediate access here, I risked undermining them - something I wanted to avoid.
Therefore, I have decided to introduce another RSS Reader, namely FreshRSS. Registrations are open and free, and the tool, like the others, runs exclusively on BSD systems (currently, FreeBSD).
I will update the wiki page with information and instructions as soon as possible, but the server is already active and operational for a few days - and is now on the Status page.

Friends of the #BSDCafe and the entire #Fediverse, Mastodon 4.2.8 has just been released, featuring some bug fixes but primarily changing registrations to be closed by default.
Since its launch, the BSD Cafe instance has required manual approval of accounts (and even so, some well-disguised spam accounts have still managed to sneak in), so I won't proceed with an immediate update but rather as soon as possible, without haste.
Today marks 7 months since I made the BSD Cafe public. These days, I'm quite busy and don't have much time to dedicate, but when I want to relax in the evening, I open one of the interaction tools and see wonderful people, great conversations, and interesting topics. I just want to say thank you to you, friends who are part of the BSD Cafe, and to all of you, friends of the BSD Cafe.
BSD Cafe Mastodon instance has just been upgraded to 4.2.7.

Bytedance is connecting to our server every few seconds. As I don't understand why and, more, I've already had problems with their rude behaviour, I've added this rule to nginx.conf:

Keep in mind that not all OS images may work fully and may lack drivers. For my #FreeBSD one for example you can just boot into memory. Debian runs quite well but still needs a custom kernel (do not upgrade the kernel unless you know what you’re doing). Even RISCV is tier 2 level in FreeBSD many things are missing. Pkg completely, ports is a mess. However, you may find QEMU RISCV images to cross-build stuff from your amd64 or ARM64 machine right here: https://gyptazy.ch/misc/freebsd-14-riscv64-build-box-image-for-qemu/

Because I can! For real, it’s an awesome new platform, almost no one is using it for production (because of the limited support (especially currently from an OS perspective), knowledge and performance). However, I’m already running some boards in production, some tests I already shared with you (see also summary) and we saw that it’s easily running my workloads - so why not?
So when speaking about „why not“ my first issue is that it would force me to #Linux #Debian instead of #FreeBSD. It would be the first time since 2008 running personal Linux server instead of BSD based ones. It’s not a knowledge problem, I heavily even contribute to a Debian based distribution as a developer, it’s more an aspect of philosophy.

Hetzner had an issue with the physical node hosting the BSD Cafe's reverse proxy, so all services were unreachable for about 15 minutes. It appears that everything is back to normal now, so we are back online again 🙂

Since I encountered some issues during testing, I'll be stopping the jails one by one as I update them (to create a snapshot), so there might be some downtime today.
Don't worry, nothing unusual is happening – it's just me updating the coffee machines. 😄 ☕

In the coming days, I'll likely declare this instance as stable and include it in BSD Cafe's services. Plurality and choice are fundamental in a free world.

By far, the service that consumes approximately twice the resources of ALL the others combined at BSD Cafe is the Matrix server (and its related Postgres).
