4️⃣ Angewandtere Ausbildung

Was sind eure Ideen dazu? Freue mich auf Feedback!

DOSBox Staging v0.81.1 has been released. Rejoice! 😎 🥳

The main focus of this maintenance release is to fix a couple of regressions introduced in 0.81.0, most of them related to game compatibility, and address a few long-standing issues.

This release was made possible by everyone who tried 0.81.0, submitted bugs and pull requests, and tested the updates. Thank you! 😎

When I force on , Firefox doesn't play the video (youtube says it's not supported). And yet, AV1 on Firefox's settings is ON, hardware acceleration in general is ON, and vainfo says that AV1 is supported by my card ( driver), and yet youtube doesn't work with in conjunction to AV1. VP9/h.264 do work, but I wanted AV1 (h264ify didn't help btw). Testing here, with Firefox-ESR 115.19.9esr. Any clues?

common linux-user FUD on FreeBSD forums:

> "modern wifi doesn't work!"
> "it won't run a desktop"

reality: user doesn't want to read docs/man/apropos

here's a Thinkpad X1 Nano:
- KDE Plasma6 on FreeBSD 14.0R-p6
- Intel AX201 wifi (basic wpa-supplicant params)
- external travel monitor: plug-n-play, it just works

time required: 20 minutes of relaxed leisurely morning coffee sipping

A thinkpad x1 nano laptop connected to an external monitor on a kitchen countertop. The monitor displays a colorful background with an overlaid settings window, and the laptop screen shows a programming terminal.

@markd @unix_discussions is doing great wrt . There are many contributors working on it. I don't know if there are any major todos left for FreeBSD to implement for proper Wayland experience. The FreeBSD Handbook also has a long chapter about Wayland support:

docs.freebsd.org/en/books/hand

Perhaps it is important to note that FreeBSD does not ship Xorg in its base system, so switching to Wayland is just a matter of installing it instead of X11.

@lcheylus@bsd.network I always have mixed feelings about such things.

While I’m fully into and services, I can also see the benefits of major and proprietary solutions from a beginners perspective.

I think it is always about the targeted user base and how to make it comfortable to them.

I can also see this with , where I’m targeting beginners who cannot afford virtual machines to learn and practice. However, to help them, you need to catch them at their starting point, which is mostly a well known service like Discord, Twitter etc. Beginners are not aware of the Fediverse, Matrix, IRC and all the other solutions. It won’t provide them or the communities to exclude them.

Moving code away from GitHub may reduce the visibility of projects and potential contributions. Moving support to nerd services may exclude them. Forcing them to deal with it, results in dead useraccoujts in long-term.

Teach them at the beginning, show them alternatives and as soon as they do it by their own will, they will switch and contribute.

I really love free and opensource software, projects and services but it does not mean that we should force people to avoid it. We should more be happy about people that decide to publish and contribute their code to the community in any way and also providing any solution to provide feedback, support etc. Decisions to a specific solution like Discord may have several reasons like not being aware of it, not having the time for it, no personal needs to deal with it (if it works, it works). Not everyone is deeply into FOSS or cares about it.

I always contributed heavily into opensource within the last years and was only on Twitter and never saw the needs for Matrix or Fediverse. I simply didn’t had the time nor the fun to deal with it - nowadays I’m running my own instances.

After more annoyances that Gnome/RedHat is pulling lately ( gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/adwaita ), I just donated to , instead of my original intention, .

The Gnome Project is a wall-garden, but not of the Apple kind. It's a club of mostly programmers & a few select others, and either you're in it, or you're not. Your user needs, your bug reports, your patches, all end up on /dev/null. They listen to no one. Never have, never will.

So, my money went to a fork.

I'm running ( version) with & on (X11/xfce wouldn't run under yesterday), and what I've seen is that ALL system prefs/admin tools from these DEs are not ported over to BSD. You only get the bare minimum of the DE. This shows how apart and have grown. Which means that if they care about the , they need to fork one of these DEs (maybe or would be best instead), and properly develop it for their own use case.

I fail to see how using ever deeper layers of tax-free to make life fair & optimal can help the citizen. What we need is competition, not free-loaders appealing to complex 'law'. solutions on hardware made in Europe is what is needed. Let Apple do what it wants & use the free market to work its magic.
