I'm as intrigued by #Guix as I was by #NixOS, but ultimately I'm not sure the complexity is worth it for me.
Even #OpenBSD has a ratio of complexity vs. benefits that fits well with my work (and play) flow.
#AtomicFedora, #UniversalBlue and #OpenSUSE #Aeon all hide enough of the nitty gritty behind the scenes — updates happen without me needing to know it.
And traditional #Debian is so familiar and reliable, it's hard not to tap it for just about any use case.
@kravemir @davisrichard437 Apparent #sjw comments in a tech project are so destructive to the harmony that it is something that could be part of the armoury of a very effective cyber attack by a state or corporate actor seeking to jam up FOSS. Agree that #nixos is so good it threatens corporations like Apple long-term. But I think that the problems are due to people so loving #nixos & their investment in it & being unable to put aside differences in value systems while collaborating.#lovenixos
Okay I'll bite... which side should I be on for the #nixos drama?
Report on NixOS Governance Discussions
https://chrismcdonough.substack.com/p/report-on-nixos-governance-discussions
"there is no moral difference taking money from Anduril or from Microsoft. Microsoft has had multi-billion dollar Pentagon and other agency contracts for many years now, and the things they produce are used wherever the U.S. Government wants to use them, including as tools for war and border control."
100% this. #nixos is so embedded in #github that it is hard to take any complaints about other partners or sponsors seriously.
@craigbro The fact that both of us can enjoy things like #NixOS, #Emacs, and #Clojure while probably being political opposites is exactly why @chrism is right.
If we really wanted peace, and sympathy with others we need to be able to find a common reason to come together and see each-other as individual humans, not totally defined by a single trait.
For a couple of weeks now I am experimenting with #NixOS incl. #Flakes, #HomeManager, #nixpkgs etc. and I am still thrilled how amazing this Linux distribution is, wondering how I was able to ignore it the last 20 years. Until my start mit nix I was declaring my #ArchLinux, #FreeBSD and #OpenBSD with #ansible locally but those days seem to belong to the past at least partly.
@nat418 @crft The situation is sad & Orwellian. A large open-source project cannot control who benefits & who contributes. People who contribute to chats using their true ID can be mobbed & blocked by often anonymous others who do not like who the identified person works for, something about them, or their views derived from irrelevant places outside of the chat. This is wrong & the fallacy of #tribalism. So all #sensiblepeople stay away & the discussion is likely 95% unrepresentative. #nixos
This is an engineering opportunity for #NixOS. On an information sharing/messaging platform, moderators and individual users should be able to silence/mute individual messages and users. Users should still be able to view silenced/muted messages if they choose. If there are blatant repeated offenders there should be the option for account suspensions and bans. All messages of suspended/banned accounts should still be available to all users, if they choose to still see them.
Old #RaspberryPi mail and web server died. Six years on an SD Card is better than I should have expected. Restored from the most recent backup... 2023-01-07 🤦♂️. First restore with dd wouldn't boot, second with gnome-disk also wouldn't boot. Works on fresh Raspberry OS, so not a hardware problem.
Rather than try to redo the tedious, and outdated (even the certificate) [how to set up a secure mail server] ( https://www.pestmeester.nl/ ) I'm thinking of trying https://github.com/RyanGibb/nixos-mailserver on #NixOS.

@whydoesnothingwork Thanks 🙏 Really good clear useful video of how modules are needed / used in #nixos with the #configurationdotnix to set ( #port #ipaddress etc. ) parameters using #execstart and #systemd for an application / #package #clouddns providing a #service .
Spent a good chunk of the day fleshing out and trying to understand others' positions wrt governance in #nixos at https://nixpkgs.zulipchat.com/ Not the waters in which I normally swim.
So far, the wheels haven't come off. Most everyone is operating in good faith.
@CliftonR I only use Windows on a corporate machine that is fantastically set up by an army of IT support folks. My family use macOS which I "maintain" and I use #nixOS experimentally but cannot stop... it just grabs you and won't let go. I think it must be a virus or a drug or parasite. Should come with a health warning about addiction. Wonderful tech. Just wonderful. (But I do not use peripherals on it....just web/LAN based stuff.)
Could you help me please?
Why does my nixos-rebuild switch fail? It fails on the very end, after all the building and evaluating is done, when starting suid-sgid-wrappers.service.
HOWEVER, here’s the weird part: build-vm works!! The vm boots and everything! If the vm works, why does switch fail?
Any tips?
My config (alongside with a file showing the error) is available here: https://github.com/LuNeder/nixos-config
Anyone manage to get a #WAN #modem (#LTE for# 4G) on #Lenovo #ThinkPad #T480 or #T480s working under #Linux especially #nixOS ? (so you can insert a #SIM in the SIM slot and use the #cellular network directly for mobile internet without using WiFi nor your smartphone as a hot-spot). Thinking of #retrofitting one... but want to know if there is any point under Linux. Thanks!
@koalalorenzo The warnings & explanations are super. Amazing tool. Noob question: can one interact with a #nixos #gnome desktop, running on a distant server, via a local machine? What nixos packages might one use for such a #remotedesktop ? (Use case: Host a website on the cloud server & use nixos gnome desktop on the cloud machine/server to create & maintain it.... rather than just upload the web files, created on local machine, from my local machine to cloud server for serving...)
@nebucatnetzer @cnxsoft good question... I think it would be neat to have a #nixos test lab type service with a website where they take tech and answers that one question on request if enough funding comes in for that question. I would gladly pay a small fee to such a site to test for me and others who have chipped in. Testing can be done with a standard configuration.nix so the results should be fast and easy to share and replicate. nixos has so so many crowd sharing foss advantages.
@cnxsoft Anyone have a project or use case to share for this product combo 5 x #nvmessd #RaspberryPi5 ? Anyone using #nixos on this ? Cheers.
If you have skin in the game for #nix and #nixos you should participate in this.

Wrote something after a long time. #nixos #flake

didn’t contribute to docs (yet) or discourse but did to some packages in nixpkgs and moderately active in the #nixos-on-arm matrix chat

Anyone have a use case and configuration.nix example for #tailscale on #nixos ?
@makemake Nixos was what persuaded me not to move to apple, & stay foss. It was a revelation & I am sure that it will form the basis of foss OS ecosystem that will become very popular. Its popularity may even cause pressure on the foss governance concept as we have seen. I would not want the situation shown in the image. A single tool maintained to the highest level seems best. #nixos is simply superb. A big thanks to all involved.
One aspect of #NixOS modules no one ever talks about: if you fetch and import modules written by someone else, you are effectively trusting them with root access to your machine
Have had to set my filters to exclude swearing & political tropes from timeline & blocked people who post & reply in a yuky manner here & elsewhere. I have tried using #reddit too & found less aggression for just 'having a point of view'. Reddit is not everyone's cup of tea, but I do recommend at least having a look to see what aspects might be different there if things get too yuky here for you here on certain topics. (Official #nixOS fora are too scary for me for now.) https://aux.computer/
Hello #Linux #LinuxMobile bubble.
I am searching for a tablet which preferrably runs mainline so #PostmarketOS or #NixOS are supported.
Must have:
- a sort of display via cable (USB-C, DP, HDMI)
- bluetooth for mouse and keyboard
- WiFi
Do any of you know of such a device? I guess #PineTab2 is not it?
Just got threatend with being blocked - seemingly even suggesting blocking on fosstodon by copying in some sort of fosstodon tag "@-fosstodon-" in the threat - for replying to a very important post about #nixos . I would recommend extreme care folks. It seems there are networks at work. How can someone from a different server chaos who posts publicly here effectively ask my instance to block me? This is absolutely unacceptable.
@rain If someone contributes openly to open source using their actual true identity, should that be discouraged by frightening off those whose employment or backgrounds or posts do not suit our world view? How is that going to work? We need to know who it really is working on the tools. It is not going to make it easier to spot nefarious planted backdoor committers if we force everyone to go anonymous. Can we let the code do the talking and keep the witch hunts for he history books? #nixos
I don´t care what you do so long as it is legal, including making weapons (not found a European society that survived without them), making profits (not found someone who can live making a loss); & I don´t really care if it is FOSS or not: but what I do care about is that it WORKS. Beautiful, reliable, evolving engineering is so beautiful that it transcends all politics & religion & social conflicts & language & culture. It unites & inspires. No-one should fight except to get it working. #nixos
How are #nixos contributors/maintainers geographically distributed? Wondering if many are in the US, esp. some who are unhappy with weapons / military / defense sponsors of, or involvement in, nixos? Perhaps folks in Europe, who have a land border with/near horrible regimes that invade neighbours, & whose own governments are running out of ammo, are really happy to have defense companies give us the means of defense & deterrent? Does the US have it so good that some have forgotten/no fear?
#nixos Umm how would a fork work - isn´t the whole point to have a massive package database and all that work goes to making it fab and complete and one thing? A fork of the packages database / sources would cause chaos, right? Is it not a particularly un-forkable OS ? Or can one fork the OS and share the package database as it is public... as you can see I am worried ... probably down to my ignorance.
This tactic of using the language of safetyism to achieve a hard-nosed technopolitical end is reprehensible. See if for what it is; a coup attempt.
#nixos #waydroid #meshtastic Anyone manage to get bluetooth working on #nixos running #meshtasic app under #waydroid (on thinkpad)...
@bluelinden @ivan @sparrows cheers- it is the former..
ls /nix/store/*-xz-*
in my case it shows immediately that the affected versions are not there unless the backdoor has been used and someone changed the names of the files on disk ha ha ha ha ha #xz #nixos
A #NixOS PSA for anyone trying to garbage collect the malicious versions of #xz and wondering why it’s not going away even after deleting previous generations and gc roots: make sure `keep-outputs` and `keep-derivations` is disabled in your Nix conf. You can turn them back on after running `nix-collect-garbage`
If you're paranoid about your #NixOS system having xz-5.6.1 cooties, you might run:
nix-store --query --referrers \
$(ls /nix/store|grep 'xz-5.6.1$'|xargs realpath|tr '\n' ' ')
... should print all packages that refer to any xz-5.6.1 on the system. Probably wanna run a nix-collect-garbage -d first.
Alternately use 'nix run "nixpkgs#nix-tree"' press / to search for xz-5.6.1 and navigate to one, then press "w" for why-depends.
Aim: get #thunderbird in #nixOS to show me my #protonmail emails without having to do any logging on each time. So after a restart or reboot thunderbird should just show me my proton mail in-tray etc. as normal, as it does for my yahoo (and as it did on ubuntu). This despite there having to be a #protonmailbridge that needs to be run & to which I have to log in using my actual protonmail password & #2FA at least once & the bridge produces a password that I put into thunderbird manually once.
#thunderbird mail seems incapable in #nixOS of retaining contact with two email accounts after a power off and power up. I have set up #protonmail using the #protonmailbridge but the setup is a fragile mess. Sometimes both accounts work, sometimes only one: the use of a 2nd account seems to make the first stop working. Some error messages go away if you ignore them. Really odd mess. Such a basic requirement.
#nixOS Is there enough interest to:
(1) establish a good set of standard nixOS configurations configuration.nix
(2) test each of them on new #hardware that comes out
so we have information about compatibility?
Surely nixOS is a perfect tool for testing hardware #drivers and so on.
Is there any possibility of a funded action? Monthly subscription? Does this already exist? Or could we just ask known #reviewers to "slap in and boot an image" which runs the standard tests, reports to url, basta.
#NixOS is most useful to me after a couple years of using it not because of any of its fanciest features, but because it gives me a place to hang stuff like this that would get utterly lost in my usages of Unixes past. It's not a *good* reason, but it's true.
Trying to install an android app in #waydroid
have the #android app in my downloads folder
using #nixos page here https://nixos.wiki/wiki/WayDroid
all that happens is what is shown in the image. What sequence of commands do I need to make the app install? Start container first? Start session first ? Totally perplexing when the command line disappears
My internet #broadband #latency of 70 ms on the #ThinkPad #T480s running #nixos and using #firefox is seemingly pants. The #iPad pro has 8ms . What hardwear factors determine this number and is there an upgrade one can do the the ThinkPad hardwear or softwear ? Or is this number determined by the browser performance? Does the number matter? (I just don´t like it when #apple stuff is clearly vastly better .....) #thinkpadt480s
Do you know of an example configuration.nix file code chunk, or similar, that (1) sets up #distrobox and (2) results is a given #ubuntu application being available by clicking on an icon in #nixOS using #Gnome ?
Aim:
I want to have the #protonmail #proton application https://proton.me/blog/proton-mail-desktop-app available as one-click on my nixOS device just from the configuration.nix setup (so if I change machine and use the configuratoin.nix the new machine will have the same setup).
https://distrobox.it/
@protonmail and #nixOS !!!! please get on this. We need your ecosystem packaged for nixOS. Thanks.
@spiezmaestro @protonmail Darn. Try installing the app in #nixos and well... good luck... no go there.
@cbleslie The goal of the #Nix board seems to be to continue ignoring the community and hope ot goes away.
Proponents of the new direction try to employ as much slippery slope, whataboutism, bad faith, strawmam, and general noise as possible to make dissent go away - with tacit board support.
Obviously neither mission can be allowed to succeed.
Spread awareness of the letter, celebrate loudly #NixOS as a first mover distro directly endorsing the western war indistry.
❄️ NixBSD: An unofficial NixOS fork with a FreeBSD kernel
「 NixBSD is an attempt to make a reproducible and declarable BSD, based on NixOS. Although theoretically much of this work could be copied to build other BSDs, all work thus far has been focused on building a FreeBSD distribution 」
@lgehr The one drawback of #nixos is quickly installing stuff on the fly is almost impossible for a newbie like me, but I also am rather relieved that I do not install stuff from random sources, but from a hopefully more reliable nix store. Packaging stuff oneself that one needs quickly is the big barrier but I thus far have not suffered too much... but so do need my Apple device and Windows device often for particular tasks. But my #nixOS machine is the sweetheart.
@lgehr Well #nixos it a bit like an personalised configurable Apple linux ... because it works and if you change computer you can get the exact same setup back again even if you set the settings five years ago... It is ideal even for a beginner because you can start on a cheap machine & if you like it upgrade to serious hardware without any time overhead. It is for me a simpler Linux because all my setup information in in one place and I do not need to rely on notes on how I got to where I am.
Should #WebSerialAPI work for #edge on #nixos ? Anyone manage ? Examples welcome of any working cases most welcome. I am looking at https://flasher.meshtastic.org/
which did not work for my nixOS #t480s trying to set up #meshtastic on #lilygo #tdeck #lilygotdeck . I seem to remember I always have to go to my windows machine to flash stuff... e.g. #RaspberryPi #sd .
Anyone manage to flash a #meshtastic device on the site https://flasher.meshtastic.org/
using the #edge or #chrome -like #chromium browser on a #nixOS machine? Any ideas why this might only work on a #Windows machine (windows 11)? hey #firefox ....
@tobozo Hi, thanks ! Fantastic... but I am in #nixOS and I think I do not have control over the Arduino "core" version ... if I have understood it..
https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/tree/nixos-23.11/pkgs/development/embedded/arduino/arduino-core
but in fact #nixOS should be ace at going back to an earlier version... probably a whole #flake saga .... but that is over my head. How to force an earlier version #downgrade of #arduino #arduinocore in #nixOS
A process similar to this but for the package.... whoah...
https://nixos-and-flakes.thiscute.world/nixos-with-flakes/downgrade-or-upgrade-packages
For #lenovo #thinkpad #t480 #t480s #t490 #t490s #t440 #t470 etc. #tseries under #nixOS does a/the #LTE #cellular #modem (e.g. #Fibocom #L830-EB #4G LTE #WWAN Modem) work without special measures i.e. does it "appear" in the GUI OS e.g. #gnome & become available for use automatically on installation or update of nixOS e.g. by running update of configuration in usual way? Are there special options in configuration.nix one has to set first? Even then, does it work? Anyone have LTE success here?
