I'm as intrigued by as I was by , but ultimately I'm not sure the complexity is worth it for me.

Even has a ratio of complexity vs. benefits that fits well with my work (and play) flow.

, and all hide enough of the nitty gritty behind the scenes — updates happen without me needing to know it.

And traditional is so familiar and reliable, it's hard not to tap it for just about any use case.

@kravemir @davisrichard437 Apparent comments in a tech project are so destructive to the harmony that it is something that could be part of the armoury of a very effective cyber attack by a state or corporate actor seeking to jam up FOSS. Agree that is so good it threatens corporations like Apple long-term. But I think that the problems are due to people so loving & their investment in it & being unable to put aside differences in value systems while collaborating.

"there is no moral difference taking money from Anduril or from Microsoft. Microsoft has had multi-billion dollar Pentagon and other agency contracts for many years now, and the things they produce are used wherever the U.S. Government wants to use them, including as tools for war and border control."

100% this. is so embedded in that it is hard to take any complaints about other partners or sponsors seriously.

@craigbro The fact that both of us can enjoy things like , , and while probably being political opposites is exactly why @chrism is right.

If we really wanted peace, and sympathy with others we need to be able to find a common reason to come together and see each-other as individual humans, not totally defined by a single trait.

@nat418 @crft The situation is sad & Orwellian. A large open-source project cannot control who benefits & who contributes. People who contribute to chats using their true ID can be mobbed & blocked by often anonymous others who do not like who the identified person works for, something about them, or their views derived from irrelevant places outside of the chat. This is wrong & the fallacy of . So all stay away & the discussion is likely 95% unrepresentative.

This is an engineering opportunity for . On an information sharing/messaging platform, moderators and individual users should be able to silence/mute individual messages and users. Users should still be able to view silenced/muted messages if they choose. If there are blatant repeated offenders there should be the option for account suspensions and bans. All messages of suspended/banned accounts should still be available to all users, if they choose to still see them.

Old mail and web server died. Six years on an SD Card is better than I should have expected. Restored from the most recent backup... 2023-01-07 🤦‍♂️. First restore with dd wouldn't boot, second with gnome-disk also wouldn't boot. Works on fresh Raspberry OS, so not a hardware problem.

Rather than try to redo the tedious, and outdated (even the certificate) [how to set up a secure mail server] ( pestmeester.nl/ ) I'm thinking of trying github.com/RyanGibb/nixos-mail on .

Hello, and pros!

Could you help me please?
Why does my nixos-rebuild switch fail? It fails on the very end, after all the building and evaluating is done, when starting suid-sgid-wrappers.service.

HOWEVER, here’s the weird part: build-vm works!! The vm boots and everything! If the vm works, why does switch fail?

Any tips?

My config (alongside with a file showing the error) is available here: github.com/LuNeder/nixos-confi

@nebucatnetzer @cnxsoft good question... I think it would be neat to have a test lab type service with a website where they take tech and answers that one question on request if enough funding comes in for that question. I would gladly pay a small fee to such a site to test for me and others who have chipped in. Testing can be done with a standard configuration.nix so the results should be fast and easy to share and replicate. nixos has so so many crowd sharing foss advantages.

I would recommend extreme care folks. It seems there are networks at work. How can someone from a different server chaos who posts publicly here effectively ask my instance to block me? This is absolutely unacceptable.

adingbatponder »
@adingbatponder@fosstodon.org

@rain If someone contributes openly to open source using their actual true identity, should that be discouraged by frightening off those whose employment or backgrounds or posts do not suit our world view? How is that going to work? We need to know who it really is working on the tools. It is not going to make it easier to spot nefarious planted backdoor committers if we force everyone to go anonymous. Can we let the code do the talking and keep the witch hunts for he history books?

adingbatponder »
@adingbatponder@fosstodon.org

I don´t care what you do so long as it is legal, including making weapons (not found a European society that survived without them), making profits (not found someone who can live making a loss); & I don´t really care if it is FOSS or not: but what I do care about is that it WORKS. Beautiful, reliable, evolving engineering is so beautiful that it transcends all politics & religion & social conflicts & language & culture. It unites & inspires. No-one should fight except to get it working.

adingbatponder »
@adingbatponder@fosstodon.org

How are contributors/maintainers geographically distributed? Wondering if many are in the US, esp. some who are unhappy with weapons / military / defense sponsors of, or involvement in, nixos? Perhaps folks in Europe, who have a land border with/near horrible regimes that invade neighbours, & whose own governments are running out of ammo, are really happy to have defense companies give us the means of defense & deterrent? Does the US have it so good that some have forgotten/no fear?

adingbatponder »
@adingbatponder@fosstodon.org

Umm how would a fork work - isn´t the whole point to have a massive package database and all that work goes to making it fab and complete and one thing? A fork of the packages database / sources would cause chaos, right? Is it not a particularly un-forkable OS ? Or can one fork the OS and share the package database as it is public... as you can see I am worried ... probably down to my ignorance.

A PSA for anyone trying to garbage collect the malicious versions of and wondering why it’s not going away even after deleting previous generations and gc roots: make sure `keep-outputs` and `keep-derivations` is disabled in your Nix conf. You can turn them back on after running `nix-collect-garbage`

Chris McDonough ✅ »
@chrism@chattingdarkly.org

If you're paranoid about your system having xz-5.6.1 cooties, you might run:

nix-store --query --referrers \
$(ls /nix/store|grep 'xz-5.6.1$'|xargs realpath|tr '\n' ' ')

... should print all packages that refer to any xz-5.6.1 on the system. Probably wanna run a nix-collect-garbage -d first.

Alternately use 'nix run "nixpkgs#nix-tree"' press / to search for xz-5.6.1 and navigate to one, then press "w" for why-depends.

This despite there having to be a that needs to be run & to which I have to log in using my actual protonmail password & at least once & the bridge produces a password that I put into thunderbird manually once.

Is there enough interest to:
(1) establish a good set of standard nixOS configurations configuration.nix
(2) test each of them on new that comes out
so we have information about compatibility?
Surely nixOS is a perfect tool for testing hardware and so on.
Is there any possibility of a funded action? Monthly subscription? Does this already exist? Or could we just ask known to "slap in and boot an image" which runs the standard tests, reports to url, basta.

Proponents of the new direction try to employ as much slippery slope, whataboutism, bad faith, strawmam, and general noise as possible to make dissent go away - with tacit board support.

Obviously neither mission can be allowed to succeed.

Spread awareness of the letter, celebrate loudly as a first mover distro directly endorsing the western war indistry.

@lgehr The one drawback of is quickly installing stuff on the fly is almost impossible for a newbie like me, but I also am rather relieved that I do not install stuff from random sources, but from a hopefully more reliable nix store. Packaging stuff oneself that one needs quickly is the big barrier but I thus far have not suffered too much... but so do need my Apple device and Windows device often for particular tasks. But my machine is the sweetheart.

@lgehr Well it a bit like an personalised configurable Apple linux ... because it works and if you change computer you can get the exact same setup back again even if you set the settings five years ago... It is ideal even for a beginner because you can start on a cheap machine & if you like it upgrade to serious hardware without any time overhead. It is for me a simpler Linux because all my setup information in in one place and I do not need to rely on notes on how I got to where I am.
