Trying out bat (the cat(1) alternative) for the first time, and … I dunno, the flushing behavior seems bonkers.

I assume it's because stdout and stderr end up in separate places, and maybe cat isn't innocent here either, but having the output split _inside_ of an escape code (note the "31m") looks like there's something really wrong.

("bar" does not exist; that's on purpose to produce an error message.)

"batcat LICENSE.txt bar | cat" prints an error message "[bat error]: 'bar': No such file or directory (os error 2)", followed by the MIT license contained in LICENSE.txt.

The "[bat error]" in the error message is printed in red.Same command; this time, the error message is printed below the license.Same command. This time, the red "[bat error]" is printed first, followed by (without a line break) the first line of the license, followed by the rest of the license as normal. After the end of the license there's the colon that would normally come after the "[bat error]", followed by the rest of the error message.Same command. This time, the license is printed first. The last line of the license, which normally contains just the word "software", followed by a period, now has an additional empty line before it and is missing the "s". Below it, there's a line containing "31m[bat error]", followed by the rest of the error message.

Have 10mins to deepen your understanding of like systems?

Check the utistd.h page. This is the header file that provides access to the POSIX operating system API. Even a quick browse can show you how your program talks with your OS.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unistd.h

For example whenever your program needs a higher privilege (or to act as another user), it calls `setuid` for that. Or starts with `sudo/doas` to have a higher access but calls `setuid` to become "nobody" in most of its life cycle.

If still have a click to spare, check the setuid.h on man pages:

man.openbsd.org/setuid.2

in most cases OpenBSD man pages are the best references you need to understand the OS.

One way of configuring a new system is just moving your whole configuration directories and fixing whatever breaks. Depending on how different the systems are and how many things break you might have a working, customized system after a while fixing.

Another way of configuring a new system is doing the exact opposite of that. You see what the defaults are, and slowly move each configuration individually or even partially, slicing a subset of essential configuration that brings less dependencies in.

If you have the time, the second way helps you really learn both the new system you are moving into and the previous one. You get to thoroughly look at your previous configuration, drop unnecessary customization where defaults could be just as good and reevaluate pointless dependencies.

It will be a lot slower, but you end up with a minimal, portable set of configuration you can then consider a new, streamlined bundle built specially for that machine and moment in time.

Recently got a cheap 128 GB SSD to see how BSD would run on my main machine, and this weekend threw FreeBSD on it. I'm sending this toot from the working system, and aside from the general configuration joy of being an Unix nerd, finding almost everything I need to know in the FreeBSD Handbook is a great perk on the second joy: reading docs and being able to flow acting on them.

@Toxic_Flange I feel I have to qualify that a bit. I use NetBSD on all my servers (4 currently, plus some virtual ones), but macOS on the desktop (and Windows for work).
I don't really *hate* Linux (although maybe I do hate systemd), I use it for my Collabora Office and BigBlueButton servers, because those are just too painful to get to work on BSD. I love NetBSD's straight-forward, no-nonsense old-school text-file based configuration.

Small rant:

is a sane platform - period!

Why?
It works and is dependable.

Does that matter anymore?
More than ever!

We live in a constantly changing world - for better or worse.
Many chase the next best thing... code is getting bloated more and more by the hour.

In the end we have a safe place to grow and learn...
It is called:

Run and enjoy the journey!
After all: This is the way it was supposed to be! 😎

"How it all began"

I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.

My today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.

#1996

This is a photo of a 6-CD set case for "InfoMagic LINUX Developer's Resource". The CD case cover has a whimsical cartoon character on the front, which appears to be an anthropomorphic penguin dressed as a wizard, complete with a wizard's hat and a magic wand. The character is standing on a stylized representation of the globe. The background is blue and there is a yellow banner on the top right corner that says "QuickStart Guide inside". The packaging suggests that this is a software resource kit for Linux developers from the era when software was commonly distributed on CDs.This is a photo of the back cover of the "InfoMagic LINUX Developer's Resource CD-ROM" case. The cover lists the contents of the 6-CD set, including distributions like Red Hat 3.0.3 "Picasso", Slackware 3.1, Debian GNU/Linux 1.1.4, and others, with various kernel sources up to version 2.0.12+. It mentions the inclusion of a "QuickStart" installation guide and additional software like X-Free86 Version 3.1.2, with references to online resources. There's also information about the included on-line documentation like "Installation & Getting Started Guide" by Matt Welsh and "Network Administrators Guide", as well as file format details. Contact information for InfoMagic, including telephone, fax, email, and web address, is listed, along with the company's address in Flagstaff, AZ. A barcode is present on the bottom right. The text indicates the product is from 1996, providing a glimpse into the distribution of Linux software in the mid-1990s.

A wild post appears!

FreeBSD has a(nother) new C compiler: Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++

See how I got the Intel running on and outputting native FreeBSD binaries--and how you can too!

It also builds a working FreeBSD kernel...

I did yet another thing no one asked for: getting the most recent version of the oneAPI DPC++/C++ running on and generating native FreeBSD binaries.

An xterm window. Inside are a number of commands: uname -a to show it is a FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE system, icx --version proving it is the Intel(R) oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler 2024.0.2 targeting FreeBSD, and a simple hello world program that the compiler compiles in both C and C++, with the expected "Hello world in C" and "Hello world in C++" outputs from the programs, and finally the file command proving that the generated binaries are indeed native FreeBSD binaries.
