I have two options now ...

1) Order Ryzen 7 5700G

2) keep money, and build pc with new GPU (powercolor red devil)

If i get more familiar in time with FreeBSD and bhyve etc then new PC will make sense.

-----

Now for future i need to look for server parts/ready solutions.

Actually, i have no idea which hardware to buy for selfhosting stuff.

Every video on youtube is like "Hey! build a low power server!" ... half video later "there's a catch! You cannot buy this CPU" 😂 Waste of time.

I need something that can draw very little at IDLE (c-states etc.).

Server purpose? i think local backup storage is good to start. Not sure if i'm able to build something in safe manner and expose to web.

I want to play with "PCI Passthrough" / "GPU Passthrough" whatever.

I plan to buy Ryzen 7 5700G or something similar with integrated graphics card.

I wonder, can You use integrated graphics for baremetal OS, and for vm PCI passthrough, GPU (rx 580 8gb)?

Whenever i read about PCI passthrough everyone say "You need 2x GPU". I'm thinking about running OS on integrated card, and use GPU for vm.

Making a flute controlled mouse

There is something about surprising interfaces: clapping to switch on lights is more fun than a flipping a switch. Pressing a panic-button to order a pizza is more fun than ordering via an app. Recently I came across this surprising interface: a flute controlled mouse cursor for a first person shooter. I recognize a good idea when I see one, and immediately wanted replica

ohhhh gosh… more RISC-V for FreeBSD!

💘 more cores 💘 more ram 💘 more ports 💘 more more more 💘

going to validate whether this SO-DIMM format will work in my TuringPi2, but generally underlying all technical plans, a vast majority of my home-lab acquisitions are solely because I want it and it's fun!

@apalu @phoronix What I mean is that is 'd and that all the stuff works in and using for newer solutions is the way to go.

Also did already drop a lot of over the years because it was either [a lot of older stuff], publicly available [ & -Series...] or was deemed to cumbersome to continue forward [vanilla support for example]...

As much as I wished we could perpetually make stuff that just runs on an , that just won't work and just like won't support systems or 7th generation game console, so it makes sense that won't support ...

I mean, is still available and working so if one needs support on , consider using that.

And yes, I do have machines that are from the 2000s that have such hardware that is affected by it...

Is there enough interest to:
(1) establish a good set of standard nixOS configurations configuration.nix
(2) test each of them on new that comes out
so we have information about compatibility?
Surely nixOS is a perfect tool for testing hardware and so on.
Is there any possibility of a funded action? Monthly subscription? Does this already exist? Or could we just ask known to "slap in and boot an image" which runs the standard tests, reports to url, basta.

MNT Reform review: brutalist hardware, familiar software

There's a channel on YouTube called The Proper People. It's two guys who travel all over the United States (and in a few cases, elsewhere too) exploring abandoned buildings, and recording both the exteriors and interiors for posterity, since many of these buildings suffer from massive decay and are often slated for demolitio

Tomorrow at work...
"Hey gyptazy, how was your weekend, what did you do?"

I recompiled (non snapshot) packages for . Currently, there're running 7 nodes with QEMU RISC-V images and one native board. Maybe I should simply switch to experimental but I guess in the current situation many new RISCV users will stay on the bookworm snapshot's which has been used as a default by for the board.

I'm now ready to swap RAM and CPU amongst my R730s. The goal: give one more RAM and the other more CPU.

As a baseline test, I'm rebuilding all 1138 packages I use. I will do the same test after the CPU swap and compare.

is notoriously "soft". It is really just digitally imprinted societal thinking. If you can think it, you can more or less code it (This is why in a rather gloomy and regressive landscape the relative success of is a rare beacon of hope).

But, on a somewhat longer timescale, computing is not particularly "hard" either. It is itself after all just coded imprints on . The actual shape of chips is very much a reflection of societal priorities and choices.

Lichee Console 4A, RISC-V mini laptop: review, benchmarks and early issues

I always liked small laptops and phones - but for some reason they fell out of favor of manufacturers ("bigger is more better"). Now if one wanted to get tiny laptop - one of the few opportunities would have been to fight for old Sony UMPC's on ebay which are somewhat expensive even today.
