Legit question... for the people more experienced than I am.

How do you know if/when you're ready to move away from ? I've been using Ubuntu for the past 2 years as my main OS and I'm feeling a little more comfortable around it and the CLI but there are still some things I don't know how to do like check logs for errors or problems, how to grep things effectively, how to search repositories for anything specific that I may need. Even when I Google things I sometimes have to Google things more than once because I didn't remember how to do a task.

I'm thinking about maybe moving to because there are still some issues with Ubuntu 24.02 LTS that I'm not sure I'll have the patience with having to report the problems and waiting for resolutions. I'd also like to experiment and learn more by doing but I also don't want to bite off more than I can chew. So I'm doing some asking around and research on this...

How many of you guys started with Ubuntu and switched out and what did you switch out to?

My Raspberry Pi (and Linux) monitoring tool now comes (v2) with option to do remote configuration updates via dashboard: github.com/nekromoff/rpi-monit

Not only you can monitor your or Linux devices, but you can change what they report back using remote updates. How great is that?

The stix.mm.fcix.net is now also live for Ubuntu ISOs, meaning that anyone in the Dominican Republic who clicks on the download links from the website, can finally download the ISO from our single power supply, single SSD, 12 year old hardware, download mirror in the country, instead of needing to leave the country for it.

This is how load bearing infrastructure on the Internet works. It's beautiful.

linux is too difficult imo, I don't understand the hype at all and why so many people are like "just switch to linux, it's easy!"

it's not easy, and why would I want an operating system that has to be taken up as some kind of hobby instead of just using my computer like normal.

i'll just stick with ubuntu instead, thanks.

It took a while, but I finally evaluated the survey. Thanks to everyone! 👍 ❤️

I was surprised by the high number of BSD users, significantly more than Win or Mac! Fantastic!

And with Linux, Debian clearly dominates ahead of Fedora, Arch and then Mint. The big surprise is Slackware! It's great that so many people still use it!

@mekuso I'm a Mint user, and I'm somewhat more at ease as I was aware of a "parallel" Debian version.

It's such a massive change on that I expected it to be discussed with the community.

But I'm not surprised, as I have worked with Canonical and with Mark himself. And I won't be surprised if they decide to go back. But I guess—if that will ever happen—that might be too late.

That is going to be an issue, both from users and (mostly, I guess?) for downstream distributions like @linuxmint

I like the idea of a firmware-like OS (I'll soon post about it) and more things like a Flatpak, but this is forcing a technology (Snaps) nobody cares about except Mark.

But that's definitely not going to work on the server side.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS released

It wasn't too long ago that new Ubuntu releases were major happenings in the Linux world, as it was the default Linux distribution for many, both old and newcomers, in the desktop Linux space. These days, Ubuntu release hit a little different, with Canonical's focus having shifted much more to the enterprise, and several aspects of the distribution being decidedly unpopular, like the s

Why both formats? Simple: in the spirit of free software, we want to support as many of our users as possible without discriminating on their package preferences.
