Long post

Happy Birthday, BSD Cafe! 🎂

Seeing your idea flourish into such a vibrant and supportive community is amazing. The positive atmosphere and mutual respect here are remarkable. It’s clear your hard work and vision have paid off.

You got me directly attracted last year on Twitter when I started with social medias and we shared exactly the same mindset - not only about related content but also about how a community around should look like. You got me back more into the community and into community related services and . I took the opportunity to create a service like for the BSD community, which provides free (, , , , for the community to learn, practice or to build their projects. Not everyone can afford own systems to learn in real setups and here we come back to the community mindset - which I honestly took over from you by providing us all your great services!

Getting in touch with all the members of the it was clear that we need something like a meeting - so we got the , where we can meet, discuss and share knowledge. I feel like home here in the BSDCafe and I can only recommend everyone who's interested into BSD to join.

Wishing you many more successful years ahead. Thank you for everything!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the BSD Pub Meeting tonight either. I had a bit of the flu on Monday and Tuesday, so I had to postpone all my appointments and I have one at 17, which means I won't be able to get home in time. I could attend from the office, but they've announced some electrical work in the building, and there will be no power until 20.

It's just not meant to be today...

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the BSD Pub meeting today either - a series of commitments and appointments will keep me busy until late evening. I'm really sorry because this meeting is a source of pleasure and relaxation for me, but sometimes duty calls...

Thank you very much! I'm really happy to see how everything works out with the BSD Cafe.

We have passionated people and developers that were brought together by the BSD Cafe, sharing the same mindset, having the same ideas - boosting up the community. Especially the one and also trying to attract , , and all the other awesome flavours to beginners. We see people working and developing new things to make beginners life easier, using service for this (like @harshad@sharma.io does with , syncing in the Matrix chat and discussing those things in the calls with the community. Providing deep detailed information, like you did yesterday with your blogpost where on got compared to on (both running on , but also are the important things to boost the visibility of BSD! Additionally, yesterday he helped me with some insights regarding the latest article on my blog, preventing potential questions that might have arisen.

So, thank you for everything!

This evening, I really wished I could join the Meeting. It's been an extremely stressful day, it's pouring rain, and I'm dead tired. Unfortunately, I won't make it on time (I'll probably be home by 21), I have a headache, and I could really use some good chat with friends at our favorite pub.

Friends of and the , some of the presentations at , hosted by @gyptazy are noteworthy and many of you who couldn't attend might be interested in watching them.

We have therefore decided to create a channel for BSD Cafe (currently on YouTube, but I have other ideas more aligned with the OpenSource spirit of the Fediverse) where the most requested and interesting talks will be published.

The first video is the presentation of Freedive, a mobile-first web interface to run FreeBSD as a personal/public server. Developed and presented by Harshad - @harshad - it allows you to manage FreeBSD server or jail services directly from a mobile device—a dream come true for all of us who often find ourselves typing commands on the tiny keyboards of today's smartphones.

I highly recommend everyone to watch Harshad's presentation here: youtu.be/YhKQsPVM8sQ

In the coming days, I will also publish my presentation on the basic infrastructure of BSD Cafe and the management of its backups.

Stay tuned!

Thanks for joining and sharing all your insights! But there's one more thing - should the call keep time boxed of 60 minutes or open end? I think today we would have needed more time but I can clearly understand when the call takes too long in the evening and people start to drop. People can of course stay in the room even after the official meeting.

Time boxed:8

is unfortunately more or less deprecated and not actively maintained anymore. The last release was in 2015. It still works more or less (at least for me and my use cases) but after our last I thought it could not be wrong to have a look at other ones. is not brand new but it got my attention by some posts today here in my Fediverse circle. So far, it looks very promising - you can have an interactive look at it on the projects website (https://github.com/run-bhyve/cbsd) or just give it a try on a test vm.

QuickStart:
pkg install cbsd
service cbsdd start
env workdir="/usr/jails" /usr/local/cbsd/sudoexec/initenv
cbsd jconstruct-tui
cbsd jstart 1

Use the tui to get familiar and afterwards you may use it without (if needed).

⚠️ Weekly Meeting ⚠️

Our first weekly will start on the 25th, April 2024 at 7 PM (GMT+2).

You can find all the details on the wiki:
https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub

For the first one, I already created a small agenda (https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub-meeting-minutes-2024-04-25). You are highly encouraged to modify and extend this, as well as upcoming agendas!

Overview:
Day: Thursdays (weekly)
Time: 7 PM - 8 PM (GMT +2)
Where: https://meet.gyptazy.ch/BSDPub (Jitsi)
Infos: https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub
Agenda: https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub-meeting-minutes-2024-04-25
Info: No recordings, no deep tech dives (keep it simple, we have calls for the details, no pressures to anyone, have fun and enjoy)

When I started the poll to ask for interests in such a meeting I wasn’t sure that even more than 5 people would be interested. I’m happy to see this amount of interested BSD users. I’m aware of the different timezones and it might make sense to have a second timeslot. This one mostly covers the European and near-east users. I’m happy to hear suggestions regarding preferred timeslots for the US, Asia,… so far, I’m happy to see at least a few of you next Thursday in the call!

Long post

wow, we already have almost 50 people interested into a weekly meeting. In the BSDCafe we already thought about possible dates and additional organization.

Different timezones make it really hard to just have a single meeting and it might end up in two or even three ones but also trying to avoid fragmentation. But this will probably work out more in an iterative way…

The current idea is to start Thursdays, 7pm GMT+2 in an unmoderated public jitsi session where everyone can join. I think the targeted user group is able to handle it in that way, like we always do.

The question is also, do we want to have an agenda or only open minded jump in and see how it works out?! My experience is, that people might be shy to start talking, it’ll be silent and people start to drop’s drop. An agenda might be helpful for an initial start but I also want to avoid having an introduction round where everyone tells something about himself. I mean, this can be done optionally, but I’m also aware of it that some may feel uncomfortable with this. This round should just make fun and not make any pressure or someone feeling uncomfortable.

So, agenda or open minded and free to talk for the first sessions?

⚠️ The BSD Pub ⚠️

Hey Fans!

We all share the same interests - based systems like , and .

We chat all day, sharing thoughts, questions and help. We talk on Matrix across different channels, we share on the . We have @vermaden@bsd.cafe's newsletter, we have @dexter@bsd.network's and calls and many other ones I can't list here.

Wondering if there would be and interests in the , , etc., for a weekly smalltalk session like in a pub. Just a Jitsi based video/audio call where we can meet, discuss things from newsletter, trending things from the or just have off-topic and openminded discussions. This could result into the meeting.

I know, some people are shy - keep your cam off until you feel comfortable and feel free to join the discussions. Even this meetings should make fun and no pressure - so if someone is not in the mood or can't make it - no worries. No one will judge.

Would you be interested?
