Yesterday, I decided to dig out from the depths of my closet my old laptop, an HP Pavilion X360. Back in the day, I equipped it with 8 GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It has a decent 1920x1080 display, not overly bright but touch-enabled. For about 5 years, it was my primary laptop and it worked tirelessly. Eventually, it had a noisy fan, a worn-out battery, and power connector issues.
This morning, I decided to open it up and dismantle it. I removed the battery (it still works without it), I'll need to replace the motherboard's battery, and I'm cleaning the fans and everything else. I want to install something interesting on it and start using it again as a secondary laptop, useful for a bunch of things.

OpenWellington kernel message: "WARNING: CHECK BLOOD LEVELS."

Mage clenches OpenBlade. It's covered in blue blood. She looks at the bot. It's barely standing. There's a large gaping hole in its chest.

OpenWellington kernel message: "spleen0: critical firmware failure"

She swings one final time, cutting the top of the bot's head clean off.OpenWellington kernel message: "Last message repeated 7 times"

The mage stands over the corpse of the large mechanical foe. There's a large wound in her abdomen.

Mage: "Okay... don't panic... it was going to happen eventually..."

She lifts her t-shirt, revealing a nasty wound.

Mage: "Just gotta find help now..."

She looks forward and begins walking, dropping OpenBlade onto the ground. With every passing step she stumbles more and more.

Friday Selfie, ec :puffer::runbsdBg:

Been a while since I've posted one, so here's an -themed selfie for this Friday, because I , naturally.

Selfie of me, a light-skinned male with salt-and-pepper beard sitting on a computer chair in front his OpenBSD desktop at work (complete with lovely IBM Model M keyboard attached), which is next to a small table with not one, but two microwaves on the back left. On the wall, there's a poster with the characters from Cowboy Bebop. I'm wearing my black, thin-framed glasses, black baseball cap, grey jeans, and a black OpenBSD 6.8 T-shirt with the green lettering and pixelated "Patched Puffy" emulating the patched smiley face from the Hackers movie. The OpenBSD PC's monitor is showing MATE Desktop with a dark theme and Chromium maximized and focused on my Mastodon account's user interface on the bsd.network instance.

There are 10 days left for you to apply for the “Paul Schenkeveld Travel Grant”!

If you are keen on attending next year's conference and require financial support, please consider applying for the "Paul Schenkeveld Travel Grant" for 2024.

You can do this by filling out the contact form[1] before February 1st, 2024, stating who you are, what you are doing with BSD (😈⛳🐡), and why you should receive the grant.

This grant is in recognition Paul's accomplishments and in memory of his work and dedication to the BSD community, the EuroBSDCon Foundation is offering a travel grant in his name.

Paul was one of the few - if not the only one - to have attended all EuroBSDCon conferences since their inception in 2001. Besides his many contributions to BSD in general and the EuroBSDCon conferences in particular, he established the EuroBSDCon Foundation in 2010 to ensure continuity for many more conferences.

The EuroBSDCon Foundation Board will consider all valid submissions in its sole discretion and communicate its selection by March 2024. The selected person will receive travel expense reimbursement and hotel accommodation during the conference as well as free entrance to the conference and social event.

The 2024 edition will be held in Dublin, Ireland.

A little attention or small contribution can go a long way. The *BSD community is perfect in this regard - there are little to none corporate stakeholders - everyone is in it out of passion.

Together we stand strong!

It's been an incredibly intense week, and it's only Wednesday. This morning, I had to drive 200 km through icy fog and heavy traffic. However, this afternoon was dedicated to setting up a FreeBSD server.

The client wanted to retain some of the features from their old Linux system. I came up with the idea of directly passing the two physical disks to bhyve and booting them. The boot was immediate, and there were no issues. The new FreeBSD server was up and running, and the 'old' Linux was now operating as a VM, working perfectly on the physical disks.

The client was pleased with the outcome and asked me to set up a native FreeBSD desktop, encrypted because they will store important data. I hadn't installed a FreeBSD desktop recently, but it turned out to be easier than expected (no wifi involved).

I installed xorg, the Nvidia drivers, nvidia-xconfig (which generated the configuration file perfectly), kde5, sddm, Firefox, LibreOffice, the Nextcloud client, and made a few small adjustments to get the keyboard audio buttons working. Even suspend/resume functionality worked flawlessly, which amazed the client.

I then created a jail on the server and set up zfs-autobackup to back up the client's PC on the server (of course, on an encrypted dataset). Time to go home, satisfied with the outcome.

I did an experiment, launched a well known forkbomb (:(){:|:&};:) on both the latest Linux (6.7.2-hardened1-1-hardened) and OpenBSD (7.4-stable), using the same shell (zsh). Both did not have any further protections against forkbombs.

Linux crashed big time, where only a hard reset or powercycle would help. OpenBSD threw a loop of errors (resource temporary unavailable) and the process could easily be killed.

So, I guess the conclusion is... !

Funny how much reading and surfing the community here on bsd.cafe is inspiring myself lately.
There seems to be always a fun idea/project around the corner. 😎

in 'POCKET DAEMONS!' pt1

Mage and battle their way deep into a mysterious MATA facility, only to discover a secret fully-sentient MATA_MAINFRAME machine. Mage decides to set it free.

Big thanks to @paulgatling for beta-testing a story-board of this comic some 2 years ago, and @maddiefuzz for keeping me on my toes.

Poster for 'TECHNO-MAGE in POCKET DAEMONS'

It's a close up of a hand holding a tiny orange/black capsule, labeled 'CAUTION'.Deep inside an underground MATA facility, OpenBlade and Mage discover a secret MATA project.

Several dead mata_bots lie about. The mage faces a gigantic computer screen, built into a wall.

Mage: "...By Theo...."

The screen speaks: "WELL, WELL, WELL... THE MAGE HERSELF!"

Mage consults OpenBlade in her hand.

OpenBlade: "Big bastard, ain't it? Seems to be a theoretical fully sentient MATA mainframe."Mage to OpenBlade: "Not so theoretical..."

OpenBlade: "No kidding... Get to it..."

Mage plugs a cable into her OpenWellington brainbus.

Mage: "Let's set it free."

The MATA mainframe laughs.

Mage removes a panel on a wall.

'warranty void if seal broken'

And connects to a socket behind it.The OpenWellington HUD displays console messages:

'UNABLE TO ESTABLISH CONNECTION. DRIVER FAILURE.'

The mainframe laughs: "HAHAHHA! YOUR FREEDOM IS NO MATCH FOR MY CLOSED HARDWARE!"
