@stefano@bsd.cafe thank you and everyone very much for joining!

We had nice talks about improving , getting new users attracted into based systems like , , but also covering the lacks of it. Outcome was, that a one already worked on that which might result in a new community project (which may also result into a new service). I don’t want to teaser too much, the related persons will provide more details and insights. It was a great first meeting, looking forward into the next upcoming ones!

For my , here's a snapshot of my desk from 2013. Although my workspace was pretty cluttered then and still is, despite being in a different house now. Under the table, there was a tower PCs, running . The laptop that was on was using , while the mini ITX desktop was powered by with , hosting various services in some domUs. My smartphone at the time was a QWERTY-equipped Samsung , which I had chosen in the hopes of finding a keyboard experience similar to the superb one offered by . Additionally, there was another laptop beneath the phones operating on . The Dockstar, running NetBSD, served as my file server; it even had remote access, albeit with a modest broadband speed of just 1.5 Mbit/sec.

Ah, the good old days. 🙂

This image depicts a cluttered office desk with various items strewn about. There's a laptop open in the center, a large monitor turned off behind it, and a printer to the right. Multiple cables, a phone, a remote, papers, and other miscellaneous items can be seen scattered across the desk, indicating a busy or disorganized workspace. The lighting is warm, and the room's walls are bare, focusing all attention on the desk area.

NetBSD 9.4 released

Hot on the heels of NetBSD 10.0 comes NetBSD 9.4, a minor release in the previous release branch.

NetBSD 9.4 is primarily a bug and security fix release, however, there are some new features, such as support for more MegaRAID controllers, ZTE MF112 and D-Link DWM222 USB 3G modems, and improved CPU feature detection for newer AMD/Intel devices. All users of netbsd-9 should upgrade if they are n

Moin Monsignore!

I've found this board in my drawer and I am wondering if i can run any kind of BSD on it: vocore.io/v2.html#VoCore

It sports an mipsel_24kc CPU, 128 MB RAM, wlan, eth usb and sdxc. It uses factory uboot, but seemingly mainline uboot supports it. I have seen NetBSD supports this architecture and also found a NetBSD dmesg booting on the same CPU (but different board), so it seems to be promising. However this dmesg is pretty old and it doesn't mentions the wlan hardware, maybe it is/was unsupported. The WLAN hw is MediaTek MT7628AN. Do you happen to know if this chip is supported on ?

⚠️ Weekly Meeting ⚠️

Our first weekly will start on the 25th, April 2024 at 7 PM (GMT+2).

You can find all the details on the wiki:
https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub

For the first one, I already created a small agenda (https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub-meeting-minutes-2024-04-25). You are highly encouraged to modify and extend this, as well as upcoming agendas!

Overview:
Day: Thursdays (weekly)
Time: 7 PM - 8 PM (GMT +2)
Where: https://meet.gyptazy.ch/BSDPub (Jitsi)
Infos: https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub
Agenda: https://wiki.bsd.cafe/docs:weekly-bsdpub-meeting-minutes-2024-04-25
Info: No recordings, no deep tech dives (keep it simple, we have calls for the details, no pressures to anyone, have fun and enjoy)

When I started the poll to ask for interests in such a meeting I wasn’t sure that even more than 5 people would be interested. I’m happy to see this amount of interested BSD users. I’m aware of the different timezones and it might make sense to have a second timeslot. This one mostly covers the European and near-east users. I’m happy to hear suggestions regarding preferred timeslots for the US, Asia,… so far, I’m happy to see at least a few of you next Thursday in the call!

It works and is dependable.

Just a Jitsi based video/audio call where we can meet, discuss things from newsletter, trending things from the or just have off-topic and openminded discussions. This could result into the meeting.

SmolBSD is a tiny BSD UNIX (NetBSD) system creation tool, primarily aimed at building modern, lightweight, fast micro VMs. SmolBSD can start a service in (way) under a second, giving it the ability to be used as a virtualized container, thus reducing attack surface and actually isolating workflows.

@Neznak I have an obvious bias towards FreeBSD. All of the major BSDs (excluding macOS) have similar management interfaces and packaging systems. They have a common ancestor, but diverged a lot over the last 30ish years. Some things are periodically shared between them.

I would be remiss to not point out as the third large one and as the fourth.

I ran on a PowerPC Mac for a while and found it very easy to learn coming from . As @tulpa says, remember that these are all distinct systems, not just distributions packaging the same set of things slightly differently. NetBSD and FreeBSD both branched from 4.3BSD Net/2 (FreeBSD via 386BSD). OpenBSD forked from NetBSD 1.1, Dragonfly from FreeBSD 4.8 - both have now had decades of independent development (or, as independent as permissively licensed open source projects ever are - a lot of people contribute to more than one and code flows in all directions).

The things that keep me on FreeBSD are:

  • ZFS supported out of the box, from the installer onwards.
  • Jails (and support for OCI containers via Podman).
  • Capsicum as the cleanest way of developing compartmentalised applications on any system.
  • pkg for binary packages and Poudriere for building binary packages (each port is built in a clean jail).

I also use pf (originally from OpenBSD, now ported elsewhere), though NetBSD's npf looks interesting.

I just installed NetBSD on a Macbook Air from 2017.

I took me almost all day lol. Had to read a lot. And learn a lot.

It has a CGD drive with /home, /var and /usr partitions. I have no idea how to encrypt / yet.

Let see if I can use it as my daily drive.

A screenshot of NetBSD

Parade du Grotesque 💀 »
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org

Here is the thing with : I like it, I really do, but it's the ton of little infuriating details that bug me.

Take a look at the 2nd screenshot: you will see NetBSD tries an ipv6 address before switching back to ipv4 once it hits a timeout.

Which is fine, except there is no obvious way to disable ipv6 anywhere in NetBSD. And I have searched for a solution!

Conversely, is as smooth as a cold glass of water in a heatwave. DHCP does not provide ipv6? Disable it!

Parade du Grotesque 💀 »
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org

I mean, it's right there in the ifconfig man page, while there is no such entry in the corresponding page (again, unless I am mistaken, corrections by smarter people are very welcome)

man.openbsd.org/ifconfig

The result is that, on an ipv4 only network, all the utilities will keep on timing out trying ipv6 addresses first.

So: upgrading to 7.5:

# sysupgrade
(reboot)
# pkg_add -u -vv
# syspatch

And we are done here!

Total time? About 10 minutes.

Updating to 10.0 = reinstall.

(Remove previous OpenSSH key from .ssh/known_hosts)

Total time? About 10 minutes.

Good job everyone! 🤓

Parade du Grotesque 💀 »
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org

also has sysupgrade, but it does not support upgrading a VM from NetBSD 9.3 to NetBSD 10 as far as I know (corrections are welcome if you know better!).

So, what the heck, I'll re-install from scratch, it only takes about 5 minutes anyway...

A VM terminal, white text shown over a blue background, showing the very first installation screen of NetBSD 10, in which the user is invited to choose the language used during the installation.A NetBSD 10 installation screen, white text on blue background, showing the installation program downloading the pkgsrc tar file over the network.

release_candidate »
@release_candidate@mastodon.bsd.cafe

As usual: my problems are because I didn't RTFM.

My VMs can boot via MBR and UEFI. But the Macbook Air can only boot via UEFI.

So installer never installed MBR bootloader, of course.

I just needed an EFI partition with the right files. Not a bootloader.

After reading a lot of different docs until 2AM, I understood what I did wrong and tried again. Also learn how to manually install it without the installer. It turns out the sets are just tarballs, so it's very easy to setup partitions and CGD drives, mount them and then decompress/install.

So I'm about to finish the installation of NetBSD on my MacBook air.

is finally about to launch!

But it also needs something like a self-service portal in long-term. However, for the website I stick to my self-written engine - I guess that fits pretty will here when it's only about serving , & .

This being said, I don't want to write a self-service portal for the web and thought about a service where you just login and can perform several actions like PTR, snapshots, system reset etc.

Currently, I only implemented the user management from an "admin" perspective. A sandbox style can be seen here:

ssh -p 2222 boxybsd@2001:470:54d7:1337::2
Password: create

It's a self-written sshd alike service which communicates with the API and some other bins. Die user login can be done by pub key and pw auth. Feel free to give it a try, it's a sandbox mode on a sandbox vm.

I like that part about where they insist on running on everything. Doesn’t mean the thing is actually useable though but it’s amusing.

Here an installation on a bare 14 MHz Amiga 1200. You may want to skip ahead if you don’t have an hour to watch text pass by.

Installing browsers on a Pi 3 running

- NetSurf 5Mb
- Firefox & dependencies : 300 Mb

And don’t get me started on launch times nowadays as a quad core CPU at 1.2 GHz is “slow” and “low end”.

Yes I am aware NetSurf cannot display most modern websites. I am not blaming Firefox. I blame the websites.

When is that thing finally going to rule the world ?

Oh look! My favorite Mastodon host is back online!

That's reason to say Hey! The @bsdcan planning team has some amazing sponsors lined up but we'd appreciate another Bronze or two, and would flip for another Silver.

The schedule is awesome and I hope to see you there.

Could you please nudge your team about a sponsorship?

Thank you!

Please RT!
(I love how that out-lasted its origin)
