I have news! Beginning next month, I'll once again be shining a big, bright spotlight on and at Forbes, essentially picking up where I left off in 2022. (This time around there will be some added emphasis on Linux-powered handheld and desktop gaming.)

Thankfully, this is a calling I can't seem to escape, and I'm ridiculously excited to bring some mainstream attention to all the projects, distros, games, and ideas -- large and small -- in this amazing community.

Stay tuned!

I saw a lot of articles about “mandating open source in Switzerland.” This isn’t true. The actual requirement is that the source code must be available (with some exceptions) for software developed within the scope of administration. It's more akin to code escrow than true open source licensing.

Only the paragraph 2 opens the door to FOSS licensing but it also the open the door to non-free license. A list of FOSS licenses should have been mentioned clearly.

OK Mastodon folks, this is your time to shine

I need some examples of common open source myths. This will have a security slant to it when I put it all together, but I'm not only looking for security examples, I want all types

Here are a few I've cooked up, but I know there are ton more

- Most projects have more than one maintainer

- Most projects are part of a large foundation like Eclipse or Linux Foundation

- There are many options for libraries and you can swap them out if needed

- Open source is more secure than closed source

- Open source is less secure than closed source

- Most projects have funding driving the development

- If I use open source in my product, I have to open source the whole product

- If the source code is available, it’s open source

- There are a few thousand open source projects

I want them all, no matter how small, silly, or obvious you think they are, let me know

The company recently released 3.1, an model they claim is "open source".

This is false. Llama 3.1 is NOT open source.

They released it under a license which under 1.b.iv. demands you agree to an "acceptable use policy" which basically forbids using it in any way they don't like. raw.githubusercontent.com/meta

This is a violation of rule 6 in the Open Source Definition: No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor. opensource.org/osd

@zuck I like that the model is openly available but really dislike how Zuck hijacked the term "open source".

Are model parameters considered code? Id say its closer to a compiled binary as its not like anyone can easily understand and change those parameters to make it do what they want it to do. On the otherhand models can be built upon even as a black box. But its not like real open source. There needs to be a better term.

Perhaps just call it a "public model".

In our vision, hacking is not an act of chaos, but an act of creation. It's about using our skills to expose truth, to stand up against oppression, and to disrupt the norms that perpetuate inequality. Hacking, in this context, becomes a voice — a voice that can be heard by millions of people.

As hackers, we understand that the rules governing our digital world are not immutable. They are human-made, and as such, they can be challenged, redefined, and rebuilt.

Our impact reaches beyond digital frontiers; we're hackers breaking through into the societal realm.

Each hack is a step towards dismantling oppressive structures, fostering a more equitable world.

Long post

Happy Birthday, BSD Cafe! 🎂

Seeing your idea flourish into such a vibrant and supportive community is amazing. The positive atmosphere and mutual respect here are remarkable. It’s clear your hard work and vision have paid off.

You got me directly attracted last year on Twitter when I started with social medias and we shared exactly the same mindset - not only about related content but also about how a community around should look like. You got me back more into the community and into community related services and . I took the opportunity to create a service like for the BSD community, which provides free (, , , , for the community to learn, practice or to build their projects. Not everyone can afford own systems to learn in real setups and here we come back to the community mindset - which I honestly took over from you by providing us all your great services!

Getting in touch with all the members of the it was clear that we need something like a meeting - so we got the , where we can meet, discuss and share knowledge. I feel like home here in the BSDCafe and I can only recommend everyone who's interested into BSD to join.

Wishing you many more successful years ahead. Thank you for everything!

Quick reminder that the term "open source" is NOT limited to mere source code availability:

▶️ opensource.org/osd

This is the official definition, maintained by those who invented and popularized the term.

I personally prefer the term "free software" over "open source". But it annoys me so much the fake definition ("open source only means access to source code") is so common these days.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 is available for purchase with Fedora pre-installed! When you look through different options and start configuring the build, Fedora is one of the options under OS ( @ubuntu is there too!)

Available in the US & Canada. Lenovo is working on turning on the option for the Europe web store.

Tell a friend who's nervous about installing Linux!
