@dexter In an ongoing effort to advance Bhyve performance and hardware options for FreeBSD in general, I've been considering the following:

This is perhaps a less than common question about hardware passthrough on VMs, but do you know if it's possible to allocate Optane NVDIMMs directly to VMs via passthrough?

Unfortunately, it seems that Intel does not provide a kernel driver compile source for FreeBSD hosts. Over the years of the series-100/200 optanes, I've had to run Linux on those hosts for a bit to have NVDIMMs active on ZFS for various pool related workloads (redundant ZIL, perf tests for L2ARC, entire pool made of NVDIMMs... and then testing data consistency and performance). At the moment I've set those hosts to run the NVs in volatile mode and act as standard RAM (fine, but not what they're made for).

So... if Intel isn't providing drivers for FreeBSD on Optane NVDIMMs now I'm thinking that it would be great to pass them to a few Bhyve VMs so that I can continue similar benchmarks to see perf changes across baremetal vs VMs.

Whatcha think?

It’s insane to see how few resources it requires to run an own instance on for the . Less than 200MB for the whole instance including the OS ( while running for days now. You can also clearly see when people are active and awake based on the CPU metrics.
