Hello Fedi-friends!

With a goal of boosting my freelancing to a sustainable level, I've listed my services (business blogging, more services to come!) on Fiverr:

fiverr.com/jesse_kelber

Would truly appreciate it if you could pass me along to anyone you know looking for a long-form writer with 7+ years in B2B SaaS.
Thanks!

I have a WordPress blog but honestly the interface isn't meeting my needs very well any more -- text entry on the web is just laggy enough that it makes writing frustrating, and the app did so many api calls that I got auto-blocked by my host... None of this is insurmountable but also I'm getting tired of it. And the ongoing issues with the CEO hassling trans people and the corporate AI moves have made me less inclined to work around problems.

Anyone got blog software they love? I'm debating going back to some kind of static site thing but think I need a way to write drafts from my phone and have them live on the server.

So the clear winner on my should-I-run-my-own-RSS inquiry was "do it", and now I am excited to see how that will play out.

I have found some nice resources, in particular the RSS Advisory Board has a nice and clean website covering specs[1], best practices[2] and a validator with really helpful hints[3].

I also found the Atom spec [4] as an RFC, but no other resources nearly as friendly so seems I'll be sticking with RSS.

Last night I wrote a minimal working and valid feed [5] that is already live [6]. Next step is writing the script to somehow parse the XML and modify it with new posts and a new "last built" date.

To start off, I won't even consider parsing escape sequences, comments, and the posts won't have any content, just a title and a link.

Initially I'll try and see what I can hack up in OCaml, but I might change language depending on what tooling I find across them. Some other candidates are Roc, Scala on Ammonite, Arturo and Nushell.

By the way, for a while now I've been on a whole quest for finding a typed scripting language to call favorite, and though that is a whole different matter this will be a nice project to test these candidates on.

I have this blog set up and ready for writing using a bare, classic web stack with no framework, no static site generator, just html/css files and some short scripts in JS and OCaml.

The only thing I feel is missing is an RSS feed. Presently I am feeling very inclined to just rolling my own RSS using the very same stack (a text editor and scripts) instead of switching to some SSG just to get an RSS feed. Something tells me that this is a sinful, heretic thought.

Ideas welcome on how to avoid such heresy. Encouragement to just do it also welcome.

This is good, as Ghost is a nice platform: It’s time to bring back the open web.

Longest shot ever.

Some 20-25 years ago u saw a blog post of someone’a redecoration of their house. They decided to put a graffiti of Purple Tentacle on their wall. I’m looking for this for quite some time without any success :(

This afternoon I wanted to solve a technical issue that has been bothering me for a while. I tried various solutions, then I started searching. I found a (valid) solution on a blog, which in turn referred to another blog. On the linked blog, where I ended up browsing, I found a post that unlocked another problem I had just by reading it.

Upon reflection, I believe a good portion of web knowledge comes from blogs, written by individuals who have an interest in sharing their discoveries and solutions with others. This is the web I love!
