gyptazy.ch is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Ok without support for searching #matrix chat room history, messages are effectively ephemeral... like connecting to #irc without a bouncer 🤦🏼♂️
This is going to probably make a lot of people angry/restart IRC/matrix flamewars, but I feel like it has to be said if we are going to push #matrix as a more open alternative to the other walled chat gardens (proprietary or otherwise) out there. I, a IRC user for decades, want Matrix to succeed, but the UX needs to suck a lot less than it does today.
does anyone have a recommendation for a matrix server I could join?
Ideally foss / programming oriented #matrix
@jadi @stefano Just browsing the wiki, I'm
a) surprised there are more services than "just" #mastodon 🤩 (wow!)
b) as a die-hard #IRC fan (nothing beats #irssi in #xterm!!!), a bit disappointed the chat stuff is only available via #matrix 😁
Hehe ... also reminds me to one day revisit my "#libircbot" (designed to write IRC bots in pure #C, actually used for a bot, but far from finished)
I am an enthusiastic supporter of Matrix because I can imagine a world where everyone can communicate securely and privately with their friends and family, companies, medical services, governments and anyone else, free of snooping and manipulation by powerful individual companies.
In this world, we can talk privately, do business, and administrate our lives without worrying about who is excluded, who is listening, and whether we are the product.

Now is a good time to become a Matrix Foundation member, because it will allow you to vote for members of the new Governing Board, who will support and guide Matrix.
A few months ago, I persuaded a client to abandon an external cloud system and use Nextcloud on their own server instead. Powered by FreeBSD and ZFS, it has already demonstrated its strengths on a couple of occasions (such as in the case of a snapshot rollback). This morning, they expressed the desire to abandon the various WhatsApp groups they use for coordination and to use a solution "all on their servers." I was inspired and quickly installed both an ejabberd and a Matrix server (Synapse) - which they will probably prefer, according to the latest news they sent me - on two FreeBSD jails.
Today, we have the awareness and experience of what it means to give our data to large companies, completely losing control over it. We have the tools, so why not use them?
And I'm really happy when someone like them, thanks to their willingness to try "new" solutions, realizes the alternatives to the colorful, advertised, warmly recommended (by salespeople) "proprietary" solutions.
#Jabber #XMPP #Matrix #Nextcloud #SelfHost #OSS #OwnYourData
This is interesting: ejabberd 24.02 has been released, with Matrix federation support

❝… macOS App Store … matrix.org lied to me. Element X is available on iOS and macOS, Element is not. …❞
I don't doubt that there's an onboarding issue, but there seems to be some confusion.
@isotopp which version of iOS?
Please see these two pages:

Not previously broadcast, I imagine no harm in doing so now:

❝Experimental (testing for newcomers, and so on). This space includes various BSD- and FreeBSD-related rooms – two of which (lobby, general) are provided by the FreeBSD Project.❞
The space also includes:
— BSD Cafe rooms
— a well-populated FreeBSD room (established long before the space that is currently provided by The FreeBSD Project)
— a throwaway comments room, where (amongst other things) I test then delete Matrix links.

Today I found out #FluffyChat apparently has read receipt indicators and they are just flaky. Never seen a single one in quite a bit of time using it on my phone and assumed it was just a missing feature. My current workaround is just having two #matrix clients on my phone, element just if I wanna check read receipts and fluffychat for anything else, though that is kind of annoying

@Damon are you in the #matrix channel on #wedistribute ? I am thinking of joining in.
